The Panthers improved their performance over last week, but it was just not enough for a win. The Falcons managed the game better and took advantage of weaknesses in the Carolina defense. Atlanta’s special teams proved to be well ahead of the Panther’s special teams. Overall, the Panthers were just out-coached and outplayed.

The first drive against the Eagles went really well. There were a few mistakes but nothing that would keep them out of the end zone. One thing that they improved on was their time of possession. The Panthers held the ball for a good amount of time on the scoring drive. Everything looked good. Then I had a sinking thought…the Panthers also looked really good in their first drive against the Cardinals in that nightmare of a playoff game. I tried to shake it off but it did little good. There were too many things that fell apart through the course of the game and the sinking feeling I felt when the last season ended came back.

True, every game is a test but this, being the first game after an ugly off-season for both teams, will show how well they have overcome the obstacles that have been thrown in their way. Both teams have had struggles on defense because of changes that have taken place. How well they adapt to these changes against very good offenses will be the true test and will probably decide the outcome of the game. Here are some of the big match-ups to watch closely that will play a big factor in who gets the win on Sunday.
