Beason Story: Much ado about nothing

November 30, 2009

I am not saying Beason did, or did not, commit the assault that is  currently plastered over every news broadcast and webpage in the Charlotte area. I was not there.

However, according to WCNC, the alleged victim:

has a history of legal troubles, according to court records, including charges of assaulting a female and writing a worthless check in 2008, both of which were dismissed. He was most recently arrested for aggressive driving in October.

If I did not know any better I might conclude this gentlemen to be one of the many overly aggressive oxygen wasters this city has seen an influx in over the years. We have all seen them on the interstates bullying other drivers and in the clubs looking for trouble. Big on mouth, short on brains. Just the type of guy that may pick a fight with a NFL linebacker.

Sounds to me like he may have gotten a quick lesson in etiquette.

Fire Fox?

November 23, 2009

Here we are again. Once a marriage between an NFL fanbase and its coach reaches four or five years, it seems talk of divorce is always one disappointment away, and only goes away for good (meaning…four more years) with a Lombardi trophy.

Last year, talk of firing John Fox would have been laughed off as the dumbest idea this side of giving Jake Delhomme $20 million in guaranteed money following his monumental meltdown versus Arizona in January.

But that deal, and the Panthers’ disappointing 4-6 start this season, has Fox in hot water again, at least with the fans. They see their Panthers as the second coming of the 2001 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, needing only a change at the head coaching position to get them over the hump. Read more

Game Grades – Dolphins at Panthers

Dolphins game crucial for playoff hopes

November 19, 2009

The Panthers are staring .500 in the face tonight.

Win against the Dolphins, and they’ve got a shot at making the playoffs for a second straight year — a feat the team has never accomplished in their history.

Lose, and it’s likely that the Panthers will miss the playoffs.

It all comes down to this game against Miami.

Game Grades – Falcons at Panthers

November 16, 2009

In the most complete game of the season, the Carolina Panthers show promise and raise hopes of …. playoffs?

On with the grades…

Offense:

195 yards passing, 185 yards rushing, 4 touchdowns, zero turnovers.  I think it is safe to say that coach John Fox would take those stats any Sunday of the year. Jake Delhomme’s leash was loosened just a bit against the low ranked Falcons pass defense and he played well. The duo of Williams and Stewart continue to show why they are the elite running back duo in the league. Travelle Wharton played very well when Jordan Gross went down for presumably the season. Travelle has been one of the more consistent linemen in Panthers history and deserves more credit than he gets.

Offensive Grade: A

Defense:

The defense kept Ryan uncomfortable in the pocket for most of the game. When that happens, Ryan transforms into a very ordinary quarterback. Sherrod Martin continues to impress at the safety position and makes me wonder what, if any, difference he would have made if given a chance earlier in the season. Overall, the defense allowed 400 yards, but only 19 points and forced two turnovers. A respectable performance.

Defensive Grade: B

Special Teams:

The special teams did little to lose this game. Given their performance this season, that is an improvement.

Special Teams Grade: B

A valiant effort in the first half followed up by a stinker of a second half. At this point, no one should be surprised.

Panthers clip Cardinals

November 2, 2009

Give credit where credit is due: the Carolina Panthers finally played the game against the Cardinals that they should have last January, forcing Arizona QB Kurt Warner into 6 turnovers and running the ball almost exclusively in the second half en-route to victory.

The story of this game was the Panthers’ defense and rushing attack. Panthers QB Jake Delhomme didn’t have a stellar game, but he didn’t have to. Jake did what he was asked — not make mistakes and make plays when you have to.
