On Sunday the Carolina Panthers host the San Francisco 49ers in an attempt to get back to .500 with a 1-1 record. Here are a few key things you need to know in terms of fantasy football and who will, and will not, perform for the Panthers.
Greg Olsen – Olsen has already reached the top 10 all time NFL tight ends list as far as receiving yards go. Within a few more games he could move up to as high as 8th place. The 49ers do not match up well at all with Olsen, who sometimes lines up as a wide receiver. I see Olsen having a very productive day against the 49ers defense, somewhere in the neighborhood of 6 reception for 90 yards and a touchdown. Recommendation: Start’em
Cam Newton – It is only week 2 in the NFL and already Cam Newton is due for a statement game. Last week he was banged up a great deal by Denver, but actually had a remarkable performance against them (all things considered). Look for Newton to show the nation he can shake off a rough week and in turn put together the MVP type performance we have seen from him over the past year. I suspect it will be a 4 touchdown day for Newton. 1 rushing, 3 passing. Recommendation: Start’em
Devin Funchess – In nickel situations, the 49ers will be playing Rashard Robinson at outside corner. Robinson was not targeted once last week by the LA Rams, so in essence this rookie is unproven. I suspect Robinson will be lining up against Devin Funchess, and when that happens Cam Newton will test the rookie. In that matchup, I like Funchess. Consider picking him up as a cheap receiver if you need one. Recommendation: Start’em
Jonathan Stewart – Stewart was limited in practice this week due to ankle injury. Stewart’s ankles have bothered him throughout his career and have been responsible for limiting his play in games. Although Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera is confident Stewart will play, he may see fewer carries than normal. I suspect backup running back Cameron Artis-Payne will be activated for this game. As such, I am not supremely confident in Stewart’s performance on Sunday. Recommendation: Sit ’em
Bonus Sleeper Pick!
Fozzy Whitaker – Feeling like rolling the dice? Go with Fozzy Whitaker who will cost you next to nothing at running back. With Stewart being less than 100%, Whitaker will get more carries. I like his chances of breaking a long one via screen pass against the 49ers, possibly for a TD.
