Matt Kalil Carolina Panthers Contract Details

There was quite a bit of panic from Carolina Panthers fans last week once hearing about the large sum of money being paid to left tackle Matt Kalil for his services. Well, the details of the contract are now out, and they hold the deal in a much more favorable light for Carolina.

Here are the details…

In the short term, it turns out that signing Kalil was not all that risky after all. Because of how this deal is structured, the Carolina Panthers would pay the bulk of the contract dollars only if Kalil works out at a starting left tackle. Considering quality left tackles in the league make a good amount of money to begin with, this is hardly a risk at all.

Kalil’s base salaries of only 1 million dollars his first two years play a role as insurance for the Panthers front office. If he does not work out, Dave Gettleman can cut ties with Kalil with relatively little penalty. However, should Kalil work out well for the Panthers, his pay would reflect that starting in 2018 when an option bonus would be paid. In essence, the Carolina Panthers have until the start of the 2018 season to kick the tires on Kalil to decide whether or not to fully execute the guaranteed money portion of his contract.

All in all, this is a very fair deal for all involved, and much less of a risk than first thought.
