As he does every year around this time, Carolina Panthers GM Dave Gettleman sat in front of a handful of media types and answered their questions, or at least gave his best appearance of answering their questions. Gettleman is never one to show his hand in a game of poker. Much of what he said was GM speak. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t read between the lines a bit now that we have a draft history to associate with Gettleman.
Dave Gettleman doesn’t necessarily believe Christian McCaffrey is a three down running back. Although Gettleman did say really nice things about McCaffrey, he didn’t directly answer whether or not he was a three down back. Instead, he alluded to his ability to run and catch and said “I guess that is three downs”. What I took from this is that Gettleman sees McCaffrey as a three down player, but not necessarily a three down back.
Gettleman could still draft a corner early in this draft. I asked Gettleman if drafting three corners last year would keep him from taking a corner early this year. “What we did last year doesn’t impact this year to a tremendous degree. You guys have seen me double down.” Gettleman said. “If they are the best at that spot, come on down!” I suspect the Carolina Panthers are taking a long look at one corner in particular. I realize a lot of fans do not want to hear it, but my sources tell me this is a real possibility.
Gettleman is considering moving up in the draft. “Time will tell, you’ve seen that I will move up.” Gettleman said when asked. I have prognosticated for a while now that the Carolina Panthers were interested in moving up, possibly with Chicago, to draft Leonard Fournette. Fournette is likely the highest rated player on their big board. Moving up for him is definitely a possibility.
