Today the Carolina Panthers square off against the Detroit Lions in the only NFL game that features two teams with a winning record. Both teams feature a stout defense and an offense that is questionable at times.
Last week, Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers looked fantastic against the New England Patriots. I don’t expect that to be the case today. The Detroit Lions’ defense is a strength for their team, unlike the Patriots. The Lions have the talent to pressure Cam Newton and cover the Panthers receivers at the same time, something New England just could not do.
I see this game resembling the Bills game more than the Patriots game. A relatively low scoring affair is likely today.
The “bend don’t break” defense of the Carolina Panthers matches up fairly well against the Lions. My main concern here for the Panthers is at safety. The Panthers pulled Jarius Byrd off of his couch and will likely be starting him today. That is not good news any way you slice it. A big play today from Matt Stafford to Golden Tate could easily be the result, and the difference in the game. If Byrd is somehow in “game shape” and proves to be a solid option at safety, I will be pleasantly surprised.
And now we have come to the most important stat of this game. In close games between equally matched teams, it always comes down to turnovers. The Detroit Lions lead the league in turnover differential, ranked 9th. The Carolina Panthers have not forced a turnover in 3 games, ranking them 31st. In terms of turnovers, this game just is not great news for the Panthers. If they have any shot of upsetting Detroit today, they must win this battle.
This game will be a close one, with the winner being the team with the fewest mistakes. I suspect the final drive of the game will determine the victor. As such, I have to go with the home team here. My heart says Panthers, but my mind is saying Lions.
Panthers – 20
Lions – 21
