Someone please explain the Tavon Austin hype.

I'm not a big proponent of the combine or pro-days in the first place, I don't think combine variables necessarily translate onto the field, and are looked at too seriously.

Is Tavon an explosive athlete? Of course, but so was this guy we just signed to a 1-year deal who was drafted #9 overall in 2007 (and outside of ST, we can all agree he was a bust for where he was drafted). Both seem to be similar type players coming out of college.

I would rather have the Allen's, Patterson's, Hunter's, Hopkin's, Wood's. #14 is too high to draft a gimmick player who I feel was more so a product of WVU system.

People on here would give their left nut to draft him in the 1st, someone please convenience me why he would be worth it...

Yeah, this thread was definitely necessary. You couldn't have just jumped into the conversation in one of the various 30 page long threads on this very subject.

It happens each year on the Huddle.

Every February, "a star is born". It is no longer a team sport once the combine occurs

Everyone wants the new Smitty. We as a fanbase have a hard on for undersized recievers.

Meh ... clicking over 30 pages takes too long. Plus I want the sarcastic posters with more than 10,000 posts to enlighten me ... I mean you have to be an NLF expert / insider with that many posts right??

i've never seen anyone as quick/electric as austin. ginn and ss89 included.

i'm not saying he should be the pick at 14, but if he's there you have to consider it. unique talent.

Agreed, which is why I don't understand the hype / need.

I may be alone on this, but I'm still holding out hope for Joe Adams (not that he is Austin, but could serve a similar purpose). Plus the addition of Ginn, makes the Tavon Austin train seem unwarranted.

Its the just the thought of him being such a small target bothers me the most. Cam doesnt need anymore small targets, he needs a bigger one to make his job easier.

Which is why I started my thread in Jan.

Don't really get the ginn comparison. He was primarily a deep threat in college. They are both fast and are good return men so I guess I can see that party of a comparison but that's really about it.

If Panthers drafted Austin, which I would love and thinks makes sense, believe that Madden users will choose the Panthers a lot. With Cam and Austin in same offense..... omg!

if we did draft him at 14, we better be getting the ball in his hands ALOT next season.

knowing our luck then his 170 pound frame gets lit by a NFL LB or S and get injured lol

Agree to disagree I guess.

Ginn and Austin's college highlight's are eerily similar in my eyes. Ginn ran a lot of end-arounds and caught a lot of slants. Austin has a slight step up on speed and cutting ability but if history proves correct ... undersized, dynamic, system WR's taken in the 1st never seem to pan out.

However no doubt about the return game of both players ... explosive!

I am no expert but I dont want us to draft him. I could see him getting banged up too easily in the NFL he is just a a little too small for my taste.

This is the real question. Would you take Darren Sproles in the first round? Because that is how he should and will be played.

the only real reason i dont want austin is because we would be able to use him as a scat back with our expensive and crowded backfield. we wont use him as a returner because we have ginn. that leaves him only to have a game to game impact at the slot reciever. not to mention i love cam but he does struggle with the short pass. recievers like this need very accurate qbs

My thoughts exactly, other than the occasional end-around (which Ginn could do), I see him as a slot receiver only in our system, primarily due to our 3-headed rushing attack (if Dwill stays that is).

I think these are very valid points even though I'd like to draft him. Also remember ginn is working on a one year deal though.

darren sproles is built like a mini-tank. austin is even smaller than percy harvin... i'm willing to bet he doesn't see as much time at RB as percy.

Part of the reason is that Austin is a movable chess piece on offense, you can do some creative things with him to confuse defenses. That is, if your OC is innovative enough...don't know if Shula would really be able to use the guy like he should be.
