  1. Someone sell me on why Butler was a good pick?

Massive conversation on this in the Draft Pick thread that went 38 pages. From that thread two comments I made was: Basically "rotational" is not only "depth" you need at least 4 DTs as "starters", we should roll with 5 on gamedays.
  2. Your biggest concern going into the season?

I agree with what was already said about Safety being fine with Boston & Coleman and the camp winners of rookie Cash, Marlowe, Ball, Robinson, Jones & Ras-l as depth. Getts said he looked at the punters on offer in the draft/UDFA and didn't see anyone worth signing. It was the first thing he ever said that got me pissed off. I would have loved to have been able to get Tom Hacket, or Lac Edwards. (Huge homerism there) I trust Getts on his evaluation of the kids coming through at DE. They haven't shown enough yet, but they've shown some and they've been in our system and they've kept working at it. For Ealy, Horton, Addison they have to take over this year, for Delaire, Cox and Miley they need to continue to show they're improving and start showing in games. But if Getts' is happy with them I'll go along with it. OG depth is Scott, Yankey, Larsen, Dismukes. C depth is Gradkowski, Masifilo. Which COULD be a huge difference (Come on Yankey!), or could be EXACTLY the same as what you wrote (IOL depth = Scott, Gradkowski). We'll start to see in camp. McClain's already gone in my mind. CB is Bene, Boykin and Bradberry/Worley/FA vet Bene and Boston have to show up big this year. I feel like they will, they both had big years comparatively in 2014/15 season and had last year to grow behind vets. Impressive if he does. Uncle Rome isn't on our roster any more; we didn't pick up his contract. To answer the question asked though, I think it's too early to be concerned. I want to see who else we sign and how the camp battles go before I get concerned. To be concerned now is to question Gettleman, and I'm not willing to blaspheme like that. But if I was a stinking blasphemer I think RT and OLine depth would be my biggest concern, followed by CB & DE. But I'm not.
  3. Gettleman's post-draft press conference - video

The difference in demeanor when answering a question from Newton and answering one from guys like Jones or more to the point Voth is HUGE. The presser after rescinding Normans tag which was supposed to be pre-draft talk was the epitome. Getts reads a prepared statement for about 2 minutes, first question is Newton and Getts is like "I just said that. I just said that in so many different ways." Big breath to regain composure and then he restates what he'd already read out. Later on Bill Voth asks about how much losing the 5th year option would be if we were to trade out of the 1st round and Getts' starts his response with "Wow, that's a good question. It's a big deal Bill..." And to top it off, in the post round one presser his laughing at Newton's question about drafting any "connahs" before ignoring him and going back to Bill Voth to add to an answer Rivera gave about Butler being raw was just too funny. I had to watch that whole sequence 5 times before I could move on. Edit: there was this also from the 2013 (I think) draft
  4. Gettleman's post-draft press conference - video

Love me some Gettleman! Always hanging out for when the team site uploads the full videos because every time I watch his pressers I learn something. It's nice to know others feel the same way and appreciate what we have. In this video what I specifically got out of it that I wasn't expecting was stuff like this: We will not draft guys who aren't intelligent (can learn our system/schemes) regardless of skill, fit or talent. Our coaches are all guys who can teach rather than just yell and scream and they accept (I think Getts may have drilled them on it) that guys coming from college are going to be fundamentally flawed more often than not. Getts said he doesn't blame college coaches for that, given the 20 hour rule and the fact that snapping the ball every 9 seconds mean they have to be simple. To judge intelligence we use a "HR test" and also try to work out how players ("of this generation") best learn - are they visual, are they "full process guys", are they better on the board, etc. "At the end of the day on Sept. 8th we play and these kids have to be ready to go."
  5. When a player doesn't fit your system

you mean after he leaves Washington? I read that Washington protect their corners in there schemes more than we do. Edit: err... what @tiger7_88 said
  6. Video: Panthers rookies Garrett vs Sanchez

Quite a few plays in that package that didn't include Sanchez. First few weren't good for him obviously. Getting abused by those quick slants like that would be a very bad sign for a Nickle, wouldn't they?
  7. Panthers Select CB James Bradberry in the second round

Yeah it took more than 2 minutes to turn the cars in which is an eternity for Gettleman so you know there was a lot of discussion/consternation about the pick.
  8. Panthers Select CB James Bradberry in the second round

Hey Dave, we got our Connah!
  9. Carolina Panthers select DT Vernon Butler

I would call that "valuable rotational flexibility". Or "day 1 impact".
  10. Carolina Panthers select DT Vernon Butler

You're right he was cut on October 1st 2015.
  11. Carolina Panthers select DT Vernon Butler

Stupid phone won't let me change Dean to Dwan in that last comment. Other thing I wanted to say was that Butler will almost certainly be behind Short, not Star. Although they'll likely both (Short & Butler) be in for obvious passing downs like 3rd & long.
  12. Carolina Panthers select DT Vernon Butler

Same number as last year, Star, Short, Dean, Love, & Cole. Love may not get dressed every Sunday, maybe.
  13. Carolina Panthers select DT Vernon Butler

It seems to me that far too many people fail to see the obvious and basic difference between "rotational" and "depth". You need more than 2 DTs on a roster. Also for some reason after seeing it work for three years the idea that you draft true BPA (for your system/schemes) and fill needs in FA seems to be hard to grasp.
  14. Carolina Panthers select DT Vernon Butler

What the actual fug? (You don't think Butler *could* become an *eventual* starter?)
