Defense wins championships, and the Panthers have a top 5 defense. With KB in the line-up, most of the offensive struggles we are discussing would not be an issue. The WR position is clearly a weakness to this offense, but I don't think anyone expected KB to be gone for the year. After they drafted Funchess, I actually felt really good about the WR position along with KB, Ginn, and Brown and then also with Olsen & Dickson. The biggest issue I see is the lack of of running game (without Cam running the ball). Even with 8 defenders at the line, the Panthers need to figure out how to run the ball with a very talented RB core. If they can get Stewart, CAP, and Tolbert running the ball along with the strong Panthers defense.....all of the WR negative stuff will go away.
This Burton guy may have some potential. He was a pretty good RT at Ole Miss, and was on the Falcons practice squad. He was cut when they signed Jake Long. He is not a complete bum....he is just young and inexperienced. I think he actually had a pretty good preseason.
The Panthers are one injury away from having a very solid WR core in 2015. After the Panthers drafted Funchess, I think everyone was excited about our WR's. Nobody expected or wanted KB to blow out his knee, but this is the NFL and injuries happen. With the improved o-line, I think the Panthers are going to ground & pound more and that is not a bad thing. In addition to an improved o-line, the Panthers also have some very talented RB's in Stewart, CAP, and etc. I still think the Panthers will pick up another WR, but in the meantime enjoy the running game.
It does not really matter if they kept Wegner, Toddman, or Fozzy....as long as Stewart and CAP are healthy.... most of the 'all other RB' work will be on special teams and an occasional run. If the Panthers have an effective running game this season it will be because of Stewart & CAP are pounding the ball (and an improved o-line). I am more concerned about the WR core than I am which RB's the Panthers cut.
I'm surprised Amini is not also on the 'bubble'. Has this guy even seen the field in preseason? Perhaps he is a serviceable backup but I am not even sure of that. He is has a lot of injury problem, and when was playing last season he was not very good.
I have a feeling that Amini is going to be a cut and will not make the 53-man roster. This guy has been injury prone and overall pretty ineffective during his Panther tenure. I hope the Panthers have learned their lesson on drafting O-lineman from small schools. From now let's only draft big boys from big schools for the oline.
The good news is that 3 of the 5 o-line positions should be better than last year at this time, and Kalil should be equal to last year at Center. Remmers and Williams (RT) were not even on the team last year at this time, and Chandler was the starting RT. Amini was the starting LG , and Norwell was not starting yet. And Turner was a rookie and not the starting RG yet. I'm not surprised that Oher does not look like an all-pro LT because he never was. He is a stop-gap until the Panthers can draft a legitimate LT. I think he will be better than Bell just from the fact that the rest of the o-line is better than 1 year ago.
I think it is Ealy's job to lose.....and play DE on the opposite side of CJ. They did not use a 2nd round pick on Ealy for him to be a rotational guy. I'm trying to remember the last time Frank played prior to the little bit he played last year. MVP of training camp does not mean diddly poo.
