of course i understand and value upside because i'm not a moron.  i'm not arguing against drafting more receivers, i'm not arguing against depth, i'm not arguing against having built-in insurance in your depth chart.  i'm not even arguing that the panthers have done a particularly good job at that.  that post i made was really just an ill-fated attempt at providing a little nuggest of perspective in light of a typically fun huddle meltdown.  whoops

yeah nice straw man that i bolded for reference there.  not going to even bother with that because i never said anything like that.
most teams in the league would have major problems if they lost their number one and two wideouts, that's the whole point.  if you want to argue with me on that then that's your problem i guess.
whether or not they'd be in better or worse shape than the panthers is immaterial and you're missing the point if you're trying to argue with me over that.  if suddenly phillip dorsett and a slot guy were your one and two and the rest of the corps was dudes who've never done anything in the NFL it'd be a problem, upside be damned.

brandon marshall's cap hit is like $9 million this year
    andre johnson's is $7.5 million
the dolphins gave up ellerbe and a third for stills
mike wallace carries a damn near $10 million cap hit this year and goes up over $11 million next.
so yeah no none of those were going to happen

well, indianapolis is considered one of the deepest teams in the league at wideout.  yet, if the colts lost andre johnson for the season and ty hilton had an injured hamstring their top two wideouts would be a first round rookie in dorsett and a slot guy in donte moncrief with vincent brown and duron carter being exchangeable between the 3/4 spots.  that's almost as shitty as our 2014 corps.
even the teams with awesome position groups would have problems if they lost their top two.  there just aren't a ton of teams out there that are stacked 4-5 deep like everyone thinks.

of all the position groups on this team that would have to cut talented players loose i would expect the LB corps to be close to tops in that category.  glanton being the odd man out isn't overly surprising to me.

yeah this is a good point that everyone's grass is always greener syndrome causes them to gloss over.  the colts are supposedly the shimmering, golden example of "surrounding the qb with weapons" but if they lost andre johnson for the year with ty hilton gimpy tomorrow they'd undeniably be in trouble.  a rookie and donte moncrief would be their 1/2 most likely which is almost as bad as what we were looking at in 2014.

thank you for this.  it's a point that people miss so damn much and it drives me up a wall.
the seahawks are a great example of this, and it's a fitting thing to mention considering the events of this afternoon.  seattle's entire philosophy when it comes to their wideouts is scheme fit.  people keep making their "well russell wilson does xyz without any real weapons what's cam's excuse?" arguments without understanding that that's not the point - their skill positions are a perfect match for what they want to do on offense.  smart guys who have good hands, run great routes, and help their quarterback out by coming back to the ball when things break down.  their system doesn't need a physical freak that rips the top off defenses to work the way they want it to.
and honestly, i think if we would have landed norwood in 2014 like proehl et al. wanted, he would have gotten more playing time here just based on the way our depth chart looked.

well, we're way the hell down near the bottom of the waiver list for one
if we waited around for denarius moore and, say, one of the 24 teams above us claimed him first, everybody would probably be losing their minds about why we just sat around and didn't do anything like, oh i don't know, trade a draft pick to somebody for a receiver

there's also an entire freaking roundtable of coaches, scouts, and other FO personnel behind moves like this.  they saw something they liked in the prospect (apparently that carried over from the '14 draft) and decided to make a call.

gee willikers, it's basically like we just spent another pick on a wideout from The Deepest and Most Talented Wide Receiver Class Ever™ like everyone on the huddle wanted!
hope you're ready for that ticker tape parade gettleman

89 would be watching the panthers 2015 season from the couch if you believe what he said about his retirement plans
