What does this situation, or situations like it involving soldiers in war have to do with trading millionaire athletes to other teams?

You guys wonder why nobody takes you seriously... Yeah.

I'm wondering if this is how the term Asperger's was derived...

OK so there's really two separate issues here...

#1 is did the administration negotiate with terrorists for Bergdahls release?  Looks like it... but so far I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt on this for a couple of reasons.  They had to know what it would look like to everyone, so why do it?  It's one guy... yeah, they're saying "no man left behind" and all that jazz... that ain't the reason.  I suspect it's either that the Taliban threatened to kill him and/or they have some op going on with one or more of those 5 guys they released.

#2 is did this guy desert?  Based on everything I've seen, looks like it.  Does that mean we shouldn't have tried to get him back?  No.  Should he be punished if that's the case?  Absolutely.

Sometime after midnight on June 30, 2009, Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl left behind a note in his tent saying he had become disillusioned with the Army, did not support the American mission in Afghanistan and was leaving to start a new life. He slipped off the remote military outpost in Paktika Province on the border with Pakistan and took with him a soft backpack, water, knives, a notebook and writing materials, but left behind his body armor and weapons — startling, given the hostile environment around his outpost.

GMA reporting that he left his weapon and body armor....pretty clear case there.  Six others died looking for this guy too.  They upped his rank to sergeant post-release?  Court-martial proceedings should be getting a look at.  Media is going to attempt to keep this guy out of Leavenworth though.

Read that NY times article I linked...

The six that died weren't really specifically looking for him although the guys are saying that they had standing orders to look for him in general, it wasn't a specific mission to look for him.

I think that's a bit of exaggeration for media hype purposes there...

Just what they were reporting...either way.  I think the desertion claim seems pretty valid.  Unless the captors got him and politely asked him to leave his weapon and body armor back.

Yeah, that's what I meant... the media is playing up that "six killed" thing...

Yes, it does certainly appear that he was a deserter, and very possibly intended to be "captured" by the Taliban.

Read an article that quoted several of his squad members saying that he left a note stating that he was disillusioned with the war, could not support America any longer, and was leaving to start a new life for himself.

If this is true, then they should have let him rot in the Middle East.

No one drafted the guy into the military.  He joined of his own free will.

Did the guy not understand what the whole purpose of the military is....you know, to actually fight in wars.

War was going on....guy enlists in the military...guy decides to defect.  He did not join without knowing what his job was going to be.

It's easy to sit comfortably behind a desk at a cushy job and judge someone who has actually been in a war before.
