US Patent Office cancels Redskins trademark

Recommended Posts

The United States Patent and Trademark Office has canceled the Washington Redskins trademark registration, calling the football team’s name “disparaging to Native Americans.”

“This victory was a long time coming and reflects the hard work of many attorneys at our firm,” said lead attorney Jesse Witten, of Drinker Biddle & Reath.

The ruling does not mean that the Redskins have to change the name of the team. It does affect whether the team and the NFL can make money from merchandising because it limits the team’s legal options when others use the logos and the name on T shirts, sweatshirts, beer glasses and license plate holders.

Join adulthood? You do realize the implications this can have? Not just for the NFL. Not just for sports. The government can literally move pawns like chess pieces on a board. I don't think these are the kinds of things they need to be controlling.

While it does border on censorship, disallowing a racial slur to represent a very public sports team probably falls more under common decency laws than censorship.  Under the same midset, you couldn't open a store in a public place called "N***** Town" or "Wet**** Central" or "Cracker Clothes Inc." (I can say that one because I am one of them! heh).

"My granddaddy's mom's cousin was a 1/4 Cherokee, so I'm part Indian, and the term doesn't offend me."

"If it's a racist term why isn't there a big outrage over it?"

1) No.

2) Settlers exterminated the majority of Indians, and what few are left today live in poverty on reservations and have bigger life issues than a football team's name.
