Where is Tony Stark when you need him?

He went into petroleum engineering because NASA had it's budget cut

Solar energy from space is definitely ideal.

There's lots of great ideas out there - solar roads, parking lots, buildings, etc - it just needs a push to have everything come together.

Battery technology is still the biggest barrier.  I've read interesting things about graphene and carbon nanotube applications.  It could happen sooner than later or it could end up being one of those technologies that's seemly always a decade away.

I had solar city come out to my house to give me an estimate. They could install panels for free, zero money down in an arrangement where I buy power from them at 14.7 cents per kwh and it increases 2% every two years. Or I could pay $14K and they could build a system that I own. I believe it was a 6500 kw system.

We would only save like $8 a month and they didn't offer batteries so I decided it wasn't a good fit for us.

But we are now having a pool put in so with the added energy costs I may re-visit it. I may even just pay to have an 8000 kw system built so that we can use the AC more freely when we are hot on these 105 degree days.

The orbit is much farther away and out of most space debris. And we built the ISS. This wouldn't even need crew quarters.

The ISS is pretty small comparatively though. For solar to generate any meaningful amount of electricity, even in space, it would have to be square miles in size. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see it, I just think the technology to assemble it is far behind the actual technology to generate the electricity.

A 6500 kw system would be in the neighborhood of 40 acres (minimum, likely a lot more), so I think your numbers are a bit off.

If it was a 6500 watt system, which would be a 6.5kw system, you'd generate somewhere in the neighborhood of 9000kWh per year, which would be well over $1000 per year in California with the purchase option.

The leasing options generally don't save a ton of money. Since they had the 2% escalation on yours every year, that means you roof wasn't a great fit for solar anyway. Roofs with ideal orientations get a locked in price.

I think kinetic energy would be the next thing to develop. The energy of people walking on a busy sidewalk. Obviously waves.

Solar power is clearly provided by the glare of Satan's hellfire....not suprising that the country that spawned Nazis uses this technology.

Only coal, Oil and Shale were created by the tears of Jesus....and approved for America!!

Also wind and Solar are not exempt from the cleanwater act....so why explore it?

So pornography sites would be the waves of the future
