"When it came to certain things, we butted heads sometimes-- route running and route technique," Avant explained. "So I knew I didn't fit his system."

Avant was limited to running clear-out routes because he didn't have the speed that Kelly covets in his wide receivers.

"When they stop calling your number and guys start running some of the routes that you run," Avant said, "I knew from the beginning that I didn't fit his style of offense, in that I'm a crafty guy that gets open in an atypical way."

I could be wrong, but I would think that a crafty, veteran, possession receiver with great hands who can move the chains would have some value in all offenses (but, what do i know?).

We can only hope that this is a case of "your loss is my gain".  Sure, at the end of the day it's all about what Avant can do for us, but I will chuckle a little if Chip's passing game falters.

Anyways, I read the Eagles boards after I saw this article earlier during the day. Most of them think he's as classy as they come but not fast enough with little YAC. He may have been bad in a fast pace Kelly offense but he may just be what the doctor ordered in our TOP methodical grind it out offense.

Strong possibility that Chip Kelly may still be a flash in the pan coach.  We shall see how his "up tempo all the time" program works in the pros over the next two years.  Not sure how players will respond once the new wears off.  We shall see.

As far as Avant goes, what is not to like?  Great hands, seems to like the tutor role, has no apparent problem working with younger players, puts in extra work.

I don't care how he gets open...just win baby.

That description more closely fits Ricky Proehl than Smitty.

My description fits Smitty's antithesis.

A WHOLE PIE!

So Chip Kelly gets rid of Deshaun Jackson and replaces him with a 2nd round rookie and gets rid of Avant and he's a genius, but Gettleman replaces a 35 year old Smitty with a first round rookie and gets rid of Donald Lafell and he's and idiot that has assembled the worst WR corp in NFL history...mmmkay.

Exactly it's all story lines and labels.

Chip is known as an offensive genius so everything he does on offense is correct

Translation = Avant actually runs routes rather than to spots which is what Kelly wants in his offense

Chip Kelly is an arrogant SOB who won't achieve anything in the NFL.

Right on. Stupid "experts" try to claim Smitty was better than Jackson currently. Sure...

sounds a lot like Proehl, and he was quite an amazing asset for us on the field.  It would be awesome if Avant was even close to that.

I second that.  19 year olds are one thing, a new system also gets a pass.  Give these multi-millionaires a couple of years of his balls to the wall every day, every play system and you will have a Tampa Bay sized revolt on your hands.

Mark it.
