Most of the major cities that everyone has been saying are great with one exception. I'd take a pass on Miami.. I've never found it extremely enjoyable or American. A good portion of the people are Caribbean island immigrants or homeless people.

Can't speak on western cities but for the East I'd do New Orleans, DC, NY, Boston, and a Charlotte to Ashville Trip for NC (little over 2hr drive).

that is exactly why I said Miami.

How could anyone forget about Hawaii? Never been there but heard it's incredible. That would be my pick.

I lived in Hawaii for...way too long.  Not worth the expense.  I'm sure it's nice enough for vacationing, but there's not much there you can't get better in Florida.

San Francisco

San Diego

New York

Chicago

Portland

And for LA area as a traveller I'd suggest Santa Monica/West LA/LA Live/Manhattan Beach.

LOL Philly, if you want to get hounded for a dolla every 15 feet that's the best place to visit. Bum city.

The sammich's aren't worth the hassle.

There's a lot of good history in Philly, including an awesome panther victory!

If you are going to California first, you should consider making your way up from SD to San Fran and then San Fran to the east by train. There's not a better way to see the country than by riding the rails. The interstates are dreadfully boring.

Go to North Carolina for sure and see the Mountains in the west and farmland, beaches, fruit stands in the South East.
