Some might point to the uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position as a reason. Smith threw 21 interceptions last year to 12 touchdowns, completing just 55.8 percent of his passes. Smith is competing with the newly acquired veteran Michael Vick for the starting job, though many teammates and even Vick clearly view Smith as the starter heading into training camp.
It seems as if his head coach's swagger might be rubbing off on Smith -- Jets coach Rex Ryan has been no stranger to Super Bowl prognostications during his time at the helm.
