Damn I love what Hardy brings to our defense. He was going to be my next jersey purchase. Guess I'll have to wait.

Meh, the franchise tag keeps him hungry for a big payday next season, and gives him incentive to play hard. Let some other team throw big money at him next season and watch him implode after it goes to his head. ( I. e. the raiders)

You don't give big long term contracts to guys like hardy, it's simply not worth the risk in a conservative business.

Still going to love watching him put up big sack numbers this season though!

If no long term deal is done, the tag on Hardy will look absolutely dumb. That would be the first bad move by Gettleman. Could've let Hardy walk and used the money to shore up our other weaknesses on the team.

I'm not gonna worry about it. For once we have a GM that knows what he's doing.

Not really. We kept our strength a strength. If we're putting our chips on Ealy, then he needs at least a year to develop into a starter.

Keep our strengths and strength. Hmm sounds like Hurney and our RBs. Sure you can do that, but you also leave all of your weaknesses weak. We sure could've helped our weaknesses with 13 mil.

Difference here is that Hurney grossly overpaid for our RBs (who then suffered from a crappy OL, poo coaching and injuries). Gettleman simply tagged an elite DE to keep the core together and to give Ealy time to adjust.

I don't see your point at all.

Exactly.  I honestly think the plan was to sign him long-term and that got nixed after this latest stunt.  If that's what happened, then I understand.  But this whole idea of him never being part of the long-term plan?  I'm not buying it at all.  We know that the Panthers were in long-term negotiations with Hardy prior to using the franchise tag on him and there were reports that those negotiations were ongoing after the tag.  Wonder what could've changed those plans?

Here's a report of negotiations prior to the tag:

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000329845/article/report-greg-hardy-panthers-talk-longterm-contract

Here's a report of hinting at ongoing negotiations after the tag and only two weeks before his arrest:

Gettleman believes odds of re-signing Greg Hardy 2 long-term deal are better now that 2014 FA market has settled & future NFL cap $$ clearer

It just seems like the Panthers are trying to save face here and are actually making themselves look worse for it.  Openly saying you blew your cap space on franchising a young DE knowing he wasn't a part of your future plans makes pretty much everyone scratch their heads.  Saying that the arrest changed those plans and now we're taking a wait and see approach makes a ton of sense.

13 mil to help our weaknesses. It's not really that hard to understand.

There were a lot of tackles that went to other teams.

Protecting your franchise QB is more important than keeping a luxury player at DE.
