Andrew Norwell - Quietly Impressive

I've never understood why Bench Press is the only lift they make players do at the combine. It's not entirely useless, but if you're only going to do one lift squats or power cleans would give you a better idea of their football strength. Does anyone know the reasoning for bench press only?


At this point the my guess would be tradition. They need ways to benchmark against over the past years, as flawed as it may be.

Another plus for him- he's smart. He knew the best place to latch on would be the team with the worst (so they say) OL in the league.

That said, considering one draft pick will be on ir, one was traded, and we lost one to new England... Who knows. Maybe he makes the 53

met him at Taste of Charlotte a few months back...  I don't think he's used to being recognized.

This x1000. Coming from a meathead bench press is terrible at determining functional strength. It's sexy as hell at the gym when you put 3 plates on each side and rip that shit while other guys try not to ogle....but a guy with high squat numbers and high Olympic lift numbers will be functionally stronger than you.

When I wrestled our lifting coach focused almost exclusively on Olympic lifts since they simulate throwing a man against his will much better than beach muscle lifts.

I wish the kid well. I really thought he could become a decent offensive linemen in the NFL due to his versatility.

It's just like how the first question people usually ask someone who lift weights how much do they bench.

Most people don't realize that bench press works out the chest muscle.

If I was a nfl scout I would worry more about how much a player can squat since the strength comes from the legs.
