I know Lester has struggled, but I want the guy on the team. He seemed to have a nose for the ball last season, and if our safeties are expected to be decent at best anyway...give me one who finds the ball and gets takeaways.

The Panthers just tweeted out a story about Anderson Russel getting first string snaps. They are building him up it seems. I wrote about him, I believe, in the first few days of camp in a wrapup. The coaches were praising him from the start. Looks legit.

Guys can we refrain from quoting these super long posts.  It's not necessary.

It looks like I was wise to leave Kenjon Barner off of my roster last week. After speaking with Jonathan Jones on the Huddle Podcast last night, he almost has me convinced the Panthers keep Joe Webb, mainly as trade bait. Could be, but I'm not there yet.

QBs - 2

Cam Newton

Derek Anderson

No change here. Joe Webb could make the squad, but I still have doubts.

Recievers - 6

Kelvin Benjamin

Jericho Cotchery

Jason Avant

Brenton Bersin

Tavarres King

Philly Brown

No change here. Bersin solidified his position on Sunday night with a couple of great grabs, including a TD. Philly Brown is probably our new punt returner.

Tight Ends - 4

Greg Olsen

Ed Dickson

Richie Brockel

Brandon Williams

No change here. McNeil's is back at practice but will be one of the first cuts.

Running Backs - 4

Jonathan Stewart

Mike Tolbert

Deangelo Williams

Darrin Reaves

The Huddle is big on Fozzy Whitacker right now, and I am too, but I don't see him making the squad over Reaves just yet.

Offensive Line - 10

Nate Chandler

Trai Turner

Ryan Kalil

Amini Silatolu

Byron Bell

Garry Williams

Chris Scott

Brian Folkerts

Fernando Velasco

Andrew McDonald

No change here.... yet. Once other teams cuts happen there will be.

Defensive Line - 9

Charles Johnson

Star Lotulelei

Dwan Edwards

Greg Hardy

Kawaan Short

Colin Cole

Kony Ealy

Wes Horton

Mario Addison

I said last week that Wes Horton had been playing well, and low and behold he gets in reps with the first and second string. He looked solid again. Keep an eye on this kid.

Linebackers - 6

Luke Keuchly

Thomas Davis

AJ Klein

Chase Blackburn

Jason Williams

Ben Jacobs

No change, best in the NFL.....still.

Corners - 5

Antione Cason

Melvin White

Bene Benwikere

James Dockery

Josh Thomas

I now have Josh Thomas over Josh Norman. Norman's bone headed penalty drew the rage of coach Rivera. I like Josh Norman, but I feel like there is no more room in the Ron Rivera Doghouse for him. Sometimes players just can't get out of their own way. Norman can prove me wrong Friday night, and I hope he does.

Safeties - 4

Roman Harper

Thomas Decoud

Anderson Russell

Colin Jones

I now have Anderson Russell over Robert Lester. Lester has struggled as of late, but Russell is rising to the task. Keep a close eye on this competition Friday night. It is very fluid.

Place Kicker

Graham Gano

Punter

Brad Nortman

Long Snapper

JJ Jansen

Practice Squad

Marcus Lucas

Andrew Norwell

Carrington Byndom

Now that 10 players are allowed on the practice squad, I have a feeling a few more offensive line prospects from other teams may be on it.

I don't know what it is, but Russell looked awful to me Sunday.  Even my friend that coaches football said he looked horrid.  You got a closer look so maybe you can paint a prettier picture than I can?  Also, I think we keep 5 RB's including Tolbert.  Fozzy included.

No point really. Lets be realistic, he is a 4th round rookie who has missed OTA, Training Camp, and Preseason.

If we are counting on him..... we are worse off at safety than I thought.

You don't bring him back to help you win. You bring him back to get him in practice and meetings. Maybe play a reserve role on gamedays. We brought Hogan back late in the season a few years ago just to take a look at him.

I don't see how Philly Brown can make this team. He's not good enough at anything. Are we going to have a roster spot dedicated to a mediocre punt returner with low upside? I say you have someone else return punts that fills a role on offense or defense or bring in someone before the season starts.

If Deangelo and Stew go into the regular season healthy, I cut Darrin Reaves. Tolbert can play running back (some would say better than the other two) and if injuries mount you can find a Darrin Reaves any time you want. If Fozzy can play special teams I consider taking him but ultimately I'm a Mike Zordich guy. Zordich can block in the run game. To me that is more valuable then a 4th Running Back option.

I would not rule out DC Jefferson at Tight End. They probably keep Brockel over him but injuries might bring him back into the fold before the season ends.

I really think Godfrey is going to make this roster as a backup that can play multiple positions. If not I think he goes on IR I don't see him being cut.

I think #55 Alex Hall has a shot at practice squad. He could simulate that 3-4 outside backer.

He can attend meetings on IR.

No need to rush the kid, and no need to waste a roster space on a guy that will not be active all season.

There are $3M reasons to keep Godfrey so I think he stays over Thomas.

I don't see Dockery, Thomas nor Norman making cuts. All have been given plenty of chances and no one has risen to challenge. Dockery stays injured don't have time to wait in him. Thomas can't cover plus he's to animated when he gets a tackle. Norman is an idiot period. Says he can't be a puppet which is true but he does too much over nothing. That's Norman v Davis confirmation Sunday was bad for him & team so bye bye Norman. I don't care about his potential because he potentially will cost us 15 yards at any moment. I believe Gettleman takes hard look @ cuts and veterans still available. I trust his judgment 100%

I'm not sure we would trade him right after extending him.

I would think his contract would add even more value to him. A team would be getting a very good player at a very reasonable price.

But they're also committing to an unknown quantity.

Committing to what? We would be responsible for the guarenteed part of the contract.

Jeremy, have you heard any conjecture on how long the 1s play Friday night?

Should be coming later today at Wednesday pressers I believe.

Personally, I hope Cam doesn't play more than a quarter again. I don't trust the Patriots.

Good point on not trusting the Pats. I never thought about that way. You know BB is still seething about last game.

Barring a disastrous Game 3 and 4, F. Whitaker will make the team, not only for his running, but for his Punt return ability.

Look for Whitaker to return punts in the Pats game, if not the next one.
