i'll just leave this here:

http://espn.go.com/b...=espnapi_public

and i'll quote Mr. Newton:

Avant has one catch for 25 yards, but he's been targeted only twice. Cotchery has been targeted only three times.

cant make plays if the QB wont target you. and from what i hear, they were catching pretty much everything Cam threw their way in training camp. people need to do the research and not react so quickly. Cotchery and Avant, while they've normally not been flashy, have always been amazing possession receivers. we certainly have our flash with Smoo (hell he may even be a feature receiver because it seems like he has speed too, and we already know he catches everything in sight). but we need strong, tall possession receivers to back up Smoo. Cotchery and Avant will keep the double teams off KB with their play. they dont need to be flashy. that's KB's job.

You know you can't read into what most teams do in pre-season. That goes tenfold for the Panthers offense since we have drafted Cam.

We all know he looks nothing like his regular season form in those 4 games, and I swear they tell him to work on one aspect or do one thing and forget the rest and he does. I still think Benjamin will be his go to guy but Cam was really good at looking at all his options last year and I think they will continue.

I think the rest of the NFL world is going to get a rude awakening with what the Panthers do to the Bucs here in a week and a half.

I had points and questions to engage you with, but they have all been superseded by this: what the hell is "Smoo"?

I could also make the argument that a QB can't target a receiver if the receiver is not open.  That being said, I do agree that it is to early to be concerned about the receivers.  In fact, I think that we could end up with a better group this year than we had last year, although it might take a few games for this to show.

Agree.

But I would change that to perceived as being open. Avant and Cotchery think they have been open, Cam apparently disagrees. Improved chemistry needed.

Ok, awesome. Asked and answered.

I would agree that Avant has consistently produced for several years and should be a good 3 or 2, but Cotchery's track record has been more down than up the last couple seasons. And outside of him the depth is unproven. Don't you think some of the questions regarding our receivers are somewhat valid?

I am more hopeful that Olsen, Benjamin, and an improved running game being enough. I think everybody past Avant on the receiver depth chart is a low cost gamble, with little chance to break big (25+ receptions).

Avant's catch where Cam threw him open was a thing of beauty.

I'm not even worried about preseason. We talkin about preseason.

Let me know when Cam starts missing wide open receivers outside of a scrimmage.

of course. i just think people are being too quick to say that Cotchery and Avant suck. there is no evidence that they do or will. and even if their production isnt what we'd like it to be, there is Cam and the OL to share blame as well.

Ok, I would agree with that. It is still too early, considering the time Cam missed, to say that we are set or screwed at receiver.

.... Cotchery's track record has been more down than up the last couple seasons.

He had 10 TD's last season, on 46 receptions- best % in the league. Not bad for a WR at 31. He's a solid possession receiver, as is Avant. Both have proven they belong on the field.

It would have been nice if Cam could have spent a lot of time throwing to the vets who are new to the team, but as Rivera said, they needed to find out who's best to fill out the bottom spots on the WR corp.

I think Avant and Cotchery will be very productive when the chemistry between them and Cam improves. I think it will improve quickly when games are for real.

Cotchery had 6 catches last preseason and had more TDs than all our WRs. He also had only 6 catches the preseason he had 82 catches. Enough said. Of course we will still have people post about how bad our receivers are before they even play a snap in the regular season.

Touchdowns are rarely predictive unless you are a Calvin Johnson or some other mammoth receiver. He never got double digits or really even approched it previously. I would chalk it up to a fluky year more than anything. I believe the only reason he had such a large role on offense last season was because of multiple injuries. I don't think he was their designated red zone target or anything.
