Safety looks as unsafe as ever

The position of safety is beginning to feel like wide receiver on offense. We just can't get it right, and something always seems missing.

Lucas Ewing says it best

"The safeties looked bad, plain and simple. Mike Adams gave up the first touchdown of the game, a wide open score by Delanie Walker; Colin Jones missed basically every tackle he attempted, L.J. McCray was saved by his receiver dropping an touchdown pass and Damian Parms looked invisible on the football field. If the team had decent depth at the position, it would be safe to say that none of these guys would make the team this year . . . at least not with today’s performance."

What a difference a game makes, huh? The thing is, the Titans have a legit offense, and we didn't even see their best receiving corps out there.

And on an off note, the Panthers most certainly need to address covering tight ends, as we were bottom feeders at that last season.

But getting specifically back to safety, I just don't know why Gettleman let Barry Church get away. At some positions we always seem to be penny wise and pound foolish.

I agree/..and don't need understand considering that Gettleman was a genius who constantly fields deep teams with no holes.  This makes no sense.

Well it's preseason. Adams and McCray made one mistake and it was a communication error. That's what preseason is for. Once they get in the grove come game one this won't happen. Still your worrying about one mistake for each player in preseason.

I think lJ McCray will be our back up safety. I saw Igo praise Dezmen Southward last game. He could be the other back up.

Colin Jones is a special teams ace and nothing more. He always struggles in coverage. That's not new.

I don't think we should worry. Besides the fact it's preseason remember this: these guys will be back ups that will play few snaps a game unless an injury occcurs.

we don't always have two safeties on the field so there will be many snaps with only one safety.

some of those miscommunications happened with back up cornerbacks who either won't make the team or won't be playing enough to worry.

as long as we are healthy and our pass rush does well it doesn't matter how bad our safeties are. Remember Mike Mitchell looked like a pro bowler with a good pass rush.

We really need to look to the waiver wire when all's said and done. I think McCray and Southward are better options than Jones but if that's the best we can do then we're in trouble. We could see if we can somehow package Funchess in a deal to get a decent SS that would be ideal IMO.

GMan was not stupid.  Safety usually is an easier position to fill, we've just been a day late and a dollar short.  Eric Berry was unattainable after all and the rest just weren't meant to be.

The one that annoys me the most is Calvin Pryor.  We literally could have likely traded our 6th next year for Pryor and their 7th next year.  The upside and depth was there.

I think there's a reason why we didn't go after him. because he sucks. Sure he was a #1 pick with a lot of hype but he hasn't done poo in the NFL. He has played with a good D line and a good defensive coach yet hasn't done anything. I think he's a bust plain and simple.

We're going to need to prioritize saftey and defensive end in next year's draft.

I just hope our scouts are doing their due diligence and looking at all the potential safety cuts that are going to happen in a couple of weeks. It's going to be a free for all.

Safety is definitely the most worrisome position particularly because what we've seen is what we have (until cuts are made).

At corner, we have Elder who is eventually going to be ready. At WR, Samuel is going to come in and hopefully provide a spark.

Based off today, we have...

FS: Coleman, Jones, Southward

SS: Adams, McCray, Parms.

So basically one injury away from a college level safety group.

We need to look for a trade NOW. There has to be a guy that can be had for a conditional pick that would be an upgrade.
