BEAUFORT, S.C. -- Officials say an alligator bit off part of a golfer's arm as he leaned over to pick up his ball at a private South Carolina course.

Read the comments. They were entertaining.

"I guess they take water hazards to a whole new level in SC."

Yeah well my bro held a magnifying glass up to a coke bottle and melted it to make the plastic your brother is using.

We were talking about this, this past weekend when I was out playing golf. You gotta be careful around water. I went hunting for a ball with my club, just beating down the grass around the edge of the water and caught a fuging red belly snake (poisonous btw).

Sorry I was out yesterday afternoon and didn't see this...

No, I have never, ever hit a ball in any sort of hazard...

I hit one close to lake on Sea Trail last year and the guy I was riding with drove us over a berm down towards the water and as we start going down the hill, we both spot a 6' gator sitting about 10' from my ball... so this guy swerves the cart away from where he's going and almost throws me out towards the gator... I was not happy.
