Mr. Scot

Backfilling DL and LB coaches (and maybe OL coach)

Recommended Posts

One other thing that might come into play here...

According to Joe Person, Al Holcomb was not under contract. That's why he was free to follow Wilks to Arizona whereas a request to interview Eric Washington could have been blocked. We also know Thomas McGaughey was not under contract, so he was free to sign with the Giants.

I find myself wondering if anyone else is out of contract right now.

Specifically, if Matsko were out, there'd be nothing to stop us from hiring Russ Grimm to coach the O-Line. Likewise, if Curtis Fuller were no longer on a deal we could go after somebody like Ray Horton.

These things are never publicized, so there's no way to know.

Expanding further into Turner's coaching resume', I found a few more potential options and some other random connections...

Ray Horton: played DB for the Cowboys while Norv was OC; later became an assistant on Norv's Redskin staff and was the Browns DC in 2013; very solid, aggressive coach who's currently unemployed but we don't have a DB coach opening (though perhaps we should)

Jeff Davidson: yep, he worked for Norv for two years in Minnesota; he might like a job where he can actually talk to the players too

Mike Sullivan: assistant OL coach in Tennessee; coached under Norv in his Cleveland season; narrowly missed being a player in Chicago while Rivera was coaching; shirttail kin

Chuck Pagano: John's brother was a colleague of Norv's with the Raiders

Kevin Greene: played for the Rams while Norv was coaching their receivers (he's got a job)

Jack Del Rio: played linebacker for the Cowboys while Norv was their OC (he's going to the Giants)

Terry Robiskie: recently fired Titans OC worked for Norv in Washington

Rob Ryan: Norv's DC in Oakland; no...just no

Steve Sarkisian: was Norv's QB coach in 2004, already gainfully employed

I'm always a big fan of guys that used to be head coaches. They were promoted to HC because they were good at what they did previously. Fill the staff with those guys and you will have a good team.

Singleterry coaching our LBs gives me the biggest rager. Obviously there is a history there but does anyone know if he and Rivera are cool?

Also, maybe I'm not super clear on how "Coaching Trees" work but I feel like McDermott is a protege and product of Jim Johnson... not Rivera.

This absolutely needs to happen.  We don't have a competent DB coach.

It could be said we don’t have a very competent head coach either.

Ron has shown no ability to choose the right players or the coaches , let’s hope Turner is a step in the right  direction finally

Does anyone think that maybe the issues with the secondary was the coach?  After all Wilks had to turn that over.  Maybe Rivera and Washington will look for someone else to coach the DBs.

We went from having our secondary coached by Steve Wilks to having it coached by an inexperienced Curtis Fuller and Rivera's old college teammate who was reassigned after taking the special teams into the toilet.

So yes...

Titans have confirmed they're letting all but maybe one assistant go, so Russ Grimm will be officially unemployed.

Dear Norv, please talk to Ron about this.

Grimm would be an amazing hire and I'm also curious if Buck will stay in ARI after the Wilks hire?  If he doesn't get a nod for DC somewhere, would Buckner come back to Carolina in the same role for our DL Coach?

Wanted to follow up on which of our current coaches had a history with Norv...

Ray Brown had the most connection.  He played a couple of years under Norv in Washington.

Pete Hoener was on the 49ers coaching staff in 2006 when Turner was OC there.

Had a cople of near misses.  Jim Skipper joined the staff at Oregon a year the same year Turner left for USC. Likewise, nickel coach Jeff Imamura left the Vikings staff just before Turner came aboard.

And of course, Cam turner is his nephew, but they've never actually worked together till now.

And now this...

One, it means guys like Buckner (if he's one of them) will be free to look for jobs.

It also means Wilks may be looking to try and poach more of our staff.

Connections: Secondary coach Kevin Ross worked two years under Norv early in his coaching career, but again, not a position we're looking to fill.  Assistant special teams coach (a position we apparently are planning to fill) Steve Heiden played for Norv in San Diego in 2001. Linebacker coach Bob Sanders spent a year with Norv in Miami, but as connections go John Pagano has a better shot at that job.
