Trump imposes 30 percent tariff on solar panel imports

Quote

President Trump on Monday imposed tariffs of 30 percent on imported solar panel technology in a bid to protect domestic manufacturers while signaling a more aggressive approach toward China.

The move is a major blow for the $28 billion solar industry, which gets about 80 percent of its solar panel products from imports.

The Solar Energy Industries Association predicted the tariffs would increase prices and kill 23,000 jobs. The group represents manufacturers as well as installers, sellers and others in the field.

we needed to invest heavily in this technology a decade ago with government subsidies, the same as with any high tech endeavor, to have a shot against Asia but hey we needed more bombs

so now lets just shoot ourselves in the foot and see bout gettin them coal jobs back

we're going to be in a world of poo if china gets ahead of us in terms of R&D on renewable energy.  china and india are already kicking our asses when it comes to awarding STEM degrees and we're basically right in the middle of broadcasting to the world that if you're brown we don't want you here.  that's how anti-intellectual, anti-science xenophobic zealots fug you over in the long term.

He's gonna pass this off to his base as "tough on china" while his rich buddies in coal and oil are high fiving each other...

Pathetic and so easy to see thru...

Industry trade organization SEIA estimates that a tariff at this level will eliminate, not add to, American manufacturing jobs. There were 38,000 jobs in solar manufacturing in the United States at the end of 2016, and all but 2,000 made something other than cells and panels, the subject of this case. Those 36,000 Americans manufactured metal racking systems, inverters, trackers and other electrical products.

SEIA estimates the tariffs will cause the loss of roughly 23,000 American jobs this year, including many in manufacturing, and will result in the delay or cancellation of billions of dollars in solar investments.

the bolded part is important.  only a fraction of the US solar industry actually manufactures panels.  this, like most trump economic policies, doesn't seem particularly well thought-out.

i mean even if you don't even want to consider that, keep in mind that most of the jobs in US solar are in installation, not manufacturing.  a sudden price hike will have a chilling effect on demand, which means less demand for installation, which means less demand for products.  so both manufacturers and installers get fuged which is why the industry by and large opposes (well, opposed) new tariffs.

i mean hell let's follow this line of thought to its logical conclusion and slap a new 30% tariff on chinese electronics too.  now the USA can just pick up the slack and make zillions of dollars and put hundreds of thousands of people to work because these companies can just flip a switch and start blasting out product.  i wonder why nobody thought of this before?

If the 30% tariff on solar panels was actually intended to create more American jobs why wasn't the same logic applied to flat screen TVs?  Americans buy a boatload more TVs than solar panels.

Wouldn't that create even more jobs here at home?

Give me a break... this isn't about helping the American solar industry... it's about killing it.

and that’s why we don’t make them here. Basically Trumps plan and goal here is to offset the tax credits so nobody buys them.

The only reason they are even possible on a large scale or commercial is because of EPA tax credits. And those are barely enough at that, this completely voids solar technology on a large or commercial scale.

There are reasons we don’t build these things in America.

The reality is a very small percentage, if any, solar panels are completely, 100% American made. Some are assembled in the US; most have components made outside the US (China).

The solar panel industry is was thriving at a growth rate 16 times better than the economy. Solar panel assembly, manufacturing, supply chain sourcing, logistics and installation contractors account for nearly a quarter million jobs in this country. It is now estimated as many as 30% of those jobs could be the victim of Trump and his make-believe, cartoon world presidency.

What a fugging idiot.
