His scene was so important to drag the viewer into the world these kids found themselves in. Kubricks having Ermey take the part over and make it his was a brilliant decision for the movie.

When I was in boot camp and our DI tried this stuff we all kind of laughed (internally of course) since we all knew we were the best company in the division by then LOL

The FMJ drill instructor portrayed in this movie was almost the guy I had in boot camp.... decades before this movie came out. 

I do remember laying in my bunk the first night of boot and wondering just what the fug had I gotten myself into.

And 20 years after that I laughed when I remember thinking this E-6 was the most powerful person in my universe at the time; and when I retired knowing I had out-promoted him by 3 paygrades.
