Question for the board: OG/C prospects

Recommended Posts

Hey all which of the following do you take? There's actually a ton to choose from, so our situation at guard and center comes at the best possible time.

James Daniels-1st or 2nd

Frank Ragnow - 2nd or 3rd

Sean Welsh -5th or 6th

Will Clapp-4th or 5th

Billy Price - 2nd

Austin Corbett- 2nd or 3rd

Connor Williams (technically an OT/OG hybrid). I've seen scouting that says he could play center as well. 1st, probably gone by the time we pick.

Isaiah Wynn- 1st, could play anywhere on the line, likely gone by our first pick.

Scott Quessenberry -5th or 6th

Mason Cole- seen everything from the 3rd to the 6th round.

Brian Allen - 5th to 7th

I'e left off the true guard types like Braden Smith and Will Hernandez since the flexibility to man either guard or center is the criteria.

There are enough we could almost target one in any round.

I say go for Ragnow in the 3rd if he's there. I also like Will Clapp in the 5th. Think he's underrated.

Ragnow is now being projected late first, early second.

Do you want an interesting LG/C prospect that NOBODY is talking about, because he is listed as a T?

Martinas Rankin, Miss St.

Overview

As a left tackle, Rankin will struggle with edge speed and as a right tackle he may have issues as a run blocker handling the power he will face. While he offers tackle flexibility and may get an early look at right tackle, his best position might be at center where his instincts and intelligence will stand out. The further Rankin kicks inside the better he will be. He may be average as a tackle or guard, but he could become a good NFL starter if he gets his shot at center.

What no Hernadez?

Hernandez is the best pure guard. No question. I'm looking Kalils long term replacement.

Ragnow, Daniels, or Price make way to much sense if this is the route we go. They play LG this year then shift over to C once Kalil retires. Immediate impact and future known benefit/roll. I'd be ok with Ragnow or Daniels in the first.

First, it’s absolutely not a given that Wynn or Williams are gone by our pick. If they are then someone like Ridley or Alexander could fall in our lap.

Second, there’s been a lot of news about Ragnow which likely stems from teams talking about him. I don’t think the draftnicks finally watched him play. I’d go Ragnow in the 3rd, but it’s looking like he’d have to be our 2nd at a minimum.

I’d be happy with Daniels in the 1st, Ragnow in the 2nd (he could go earlier) or Braden Smith (who was a private visit) in the 3rd. All 3 had private visits so I’d put more stock in them. Daniels will be 21 this season and Ragnow turns 22, so they may have even higher ceilings. I like both of them. I know you said no Smith but he’s on our radar.

Smith is my second best pure guard. I'm an Auburn fan, so I've seen him a lot. Sometimes he totally crushes people, but he does have an inconsistent streak. Strong as a mule. He could also play some RT in a pinch.

To be honest, I'd be fine grabbing someone who can play center at a high level, even if they start guard.

Looking at how the NFL free agent season went, Guards got PAID.  So I expect that teams are going to look at guys who can be really good Guards much higher than previously in order to get that 5th year option out of them.

For me, the sooner the better.  Don't expect another Norwell this summer.

i like the idea of taking a flier on Price after his injury. those are the type of guys that end up being steals

I can't help but wonder what all this G/C talk means about Moton.  He had a shot last year to play some G, and we got Silatolu'ed instead.  Is Moton really being groomed to play T?  Wouldn't playing help develop him better than a second redshirt year?

To me, there are 3 options:

1. Moton sucks

2. Moton IS going to play LG, so the Panthers will not be drafting a C early.  That is why they signed Larsen to a 1-year contract.

3. Moton is going to replace Matt Kalil this year.

Bonus Option:  Moton is going to play G this year, C next season.

Did you listen to The Rotoworld podcast a few days about?  Same points they made.

I am curious if there is some smoke screening going on here, the usual pre-draft stuff.  Maybe they do feel really good about Moton at LG, but they know that the 20s teams do have some needs there.  Hurn-dawg trying to get people to over draft some of these OG/Cs?  With back up plans later in the draft?

WR round 1???  Is it tomorrow yet?

Rotoworld has a podcast?

I think we are looking WR in round 1 if Ridley or Moore is there.  If not, we trade back if we can and take a DB.

Josh Norris is the host, and it's a pretty good podcast as far as draft stuff goes.  It's very enjoyable while walking my dog and picking up her crap at 4:30 in the AM.  Maybe not life changing =)

I can't say I would be upset with either of those WRs in the first.  Anything to help the team get better, get Cam more weapons.  We need to get better in our passing game.  Either of those guys helps in different ways.

All the current talk is that Ragnow might be off the board even before our first. Whether that is accurate or not we will find out. It's safe to say he won't be there in the 3rd and most likely not there for our second selection

I think there are other options. First, I think Ron would rather go with an experienced Amini as a plug in than an unknown. Norwell, Matt Kalil and Williams missed 2 total snaps in 2017. Those are the three places that Moton would have slid into based on the team saying they wanted him as a tackle and LG being an easier position than RG. Turner and Ryan were the only ones to miss time and I don’t think Ron trusted Moton nor do I think he was practicing at all as Turner’s backup. Moton was a jumbo tackle. He didn’t play much but that’s where they used him.

Now, if Moton has a shot he’ll actually be practicing as a LG. I don’t think he practiced at G last year much if at all. I liked what I saw in the jumbo packages, I think he can be a road grader type of LG. Hopefully, he does win the job but if he does we need more depth at T and of course we need a young C to take over for Kalil. I’d love to get Ragnow or Daniels or Price. We’ll see how it shakes out.
