The Jayhawks topped the preseason ESPN/USA Today Top 25 coaches' poll, which was released Thursday.

Michigan State, which finished as the runner-up in the 2009 NCAA tournament, starts the 2009-10 campaign second in the poll.

After a 23-12 finish last season, Texas makes a big jump to the No. 3 spot, while national champion North Carolina Tar Heels starts out in the fourth position.

Kentucky didn't finish last season in the rankings, but John Calipari's arrival coincides with a No. 5 ranking.

Villanova, Purdue, Duke, West Virginia and Butler round out the top 10.

I said this a couple months after the season and I'm sticking with it.

1. Kansas

2. Nova

3. Kentucky

4. Michigan St.

5. Texas

6. Duke

7. Purdue

8. UNC

9. WVU

10. Tenn

Look at guard play and those are your top 6 or 7 teams. I know some of the UNC fans will try to call me out about not being in the top 5 but think about it this way...for you guys to be a top 5 team Larry Drew is going to have to do MORE than Ty Lawson.

There is no Tyler Hansbrough, no Ty Lawson, no Danny Green, and no Wayne Ellington. I know there is talent there but the last time you lost 4 lottery picks you were two and done WITH Tyler Hansbrough (arguably the best college basketball player of the last decade).

This poll really does not matter. The AP poll is the correct poll.

The only real poll that matters is the last one.

I'm a UNC fan and I think having UNC in the top 5 right now wouldn't be a good pick. But I also think that having Duke in the top 10 is a little bit generous also. I think by the end of the season UNC has a chance to be a pretty good team, maybe even top 5, but I've got to see LD II play a few games before I get my hopes up.
