Should never be a surprise. If she did what you said she did, they can't really say anything.
But I would communicate the fact you did NOT fire her, she did. You hire and fire yourself.
As tough as the economy is, all the more for us to bite the bullet to stay employed.

You can work your ass off, if they want to make budget cuts, they fire the people that make the most. Which is usually the people that have been there the longest.

Oh, and remember, si habla cheap labor

If you would like to do it until you don't feel bad about it, I have a number of people you can practice on.

The biggest mistakes I see when chasnges are made are 1) management using it as a way to negatively motivate the others and 2) not communicating.

Assuming you have a decent group, get them all together and let them know that these things happen and while it would be wise for everyone to stay diligent and do a good job it isn't managment's intention to go around firing everyone who makes a small mistake.

alos if this person was in a clique or had a best buddy who might get upset talk to them first.

There's only one boss, don't make the meeting into a committee to validate your decision.

Resist the urge to rationalize your decision with a group of employees or singly and keep comments about the termination consistent and minimal. Stay focused on moving ahead, looking back shows weakness.

lots of bigger company just hire a new person, then heads roll. thats my advice. if it affects you bad enough, get someone else to do the firing. its much harder if you know the person and the effect on their family.

All very good advice.
Sucks having to let folks go this time of year but like someone posted, you didn't fire the person, she pretty much got herself let go.

My suggestion is to outsource the "downsizing" with these guys...
