With the way this team is acting, Hurney is going to have a Pièce de résistance draft in order for us to make the playoffs.

Brayton visiting Seattle, still uncertain whether Panthers will try to keep him

Panthers unrestricted free agent defensive end Tyler Brayton is in Seattle today for meetings with the Seattle Seahawks, which are planned into the evening. He’s scheduled to fly back to Charlotte late tonight, and it isn’t known yet whether the Seahawks will try to commence contract negotiations before Brayton’s departure.

The Panthers conducted contract talks with Brayton’s representatives before free agency started, but were unable to strike a deal. Brayton, who started 31 games the past two seasons, said late last season that he wanted to stay with the Panthers, but it isn’t known whether the team will continue to make an effort to bring him back.

He played very well last year, but is 30 and that’s older than all but three players on the roster after a week of purging 30-and-over types in what sure seems to signal a youth movement.

Brayton has been a nice fit for the Panthers as a defensive end on run downs who can move inside to the tackle position in passing situations. He’s also been disruptive as a pass rusher. A former first-round pick of the Oakland Raiders, he’s had the two best sack totals of his career with Carolina – five this season and 4½ in 2008.

Brayton led all Panthers’ defensive linemen last season with 45 tackles and his five sacks ranked second. He also had two forced fumbles.

With Pro Bowl defensive end Julius Peppers already gone to the Chicago Bears via free agency, getting Brayton back would seem a boost for a defensive line that currently has no starters returning.

As of now, Everette Brown, a 2009 second-round pick, and third-year man Chares Johnson, are the Panthers’ top two defensive ends. They have a combined five career starts.

Derek Anderson issues a hearty "kiss my a$$" on his way out of Cleveland.

"The fans are ruthless and don't deserve a winner," Anderson said. "I will never forget getting cheered when I was injured. I know at times I wasn't great. I hope and pray I'm playing when my team comes to town and [we] roll them."

I don't think Anderson would make the ideal "veteran backup" we need.
