It certainly seems like the people on the boats were trying to instigate a confrontation and that the Israelis could have handled it with a lot more restraint. Both sides acting irresponsibly and stupidly.

This kind of sh*t could start a global war, especially with all the other crap going on right now.

I only have one thought on the entire process right now.

Which is this:

Don't fug with a country that turned away the Russian Army/Infantry with a bunch of shotguns and homemade gernades. I don't care how depleted that Army was, don't fug with those people.

i know you're you, but what in the world are you talking about right now

Big mistake by the Israelis. While these protesters were pretty stupid, they were also turkish. Turkey is the closest thing to a friend they have in the region, and this is going to cause a lot of anger from the Turks. They have already recalled their ambassador and canceled several military exercises with the Israelis.

Israeli who called the shots: "As God is my witness I thought Turks could fly."

Just stonewall the boat. That's all they had to do. Can they at least wait 40 years before bringing Bibilical prophecies to life?

sheesh

They had the pre-intelligence and the time to set up a blockade but chose a bloodbath to make a point. Plus they'd rather start some sh*t while we're there anyway to suck us in.

More examples of why this country should have never been recreated. How're we going to justify supporting them now... or will it just get swept under the rug as the next piece of "socialist" litigation hits the House?

They are much too heavy handed. Are we going to start blowing Cuban and Haitian rafts out of the water? They could have tried to escort them out of their waters. WHEN they reached their waters.

My thing is they really want to start a war and look for our backing afterward, having ignored all our advice and pleading for them not to be so damn violent. Fear is making them stupid. Those boats were not a legitimate threat.

Shameful, stupid

That's apples and oranges. If these people wanted to deliver something to the Gaza strip, then they could have negotiated that with the Israeli government.

Israel said 4 days ago that it would stop any flotilla. These people said in the article Jangler posted above

"We fully intend to go to Gaza regardless of any intimidation or threats of violence against us," she said. "They are going to have to forcefully stop us."

and they were even given the opportunity to turn the fug around. They were warned that if they came any farther, action would be taken. The came farther, and action was taken. I can see the argument that Israel maybe should have used a little more restraint, but as I said above, they're not in a position to not follow through with what they say they're going to do.

In the Middle East, Israel is backed into a corner.

Every day the Israeli government lets ships into Gaza, so long as it has been co-ordinated with the Israeli government.

So while yes, the loss of life is tragic, you can't be mad at Israel for doing what it said it was going to do all along. Especially after it looks like these people were looking for a problem.

If you're Israel, and you say all along you're not going to let anything close to Gaza, then all of a sudden you let something close to Gaza, that lets the others know (most of whom hate you) that you're all talk and no walk. Israel can't afford to have that reputation.

That's like having your parents tell you they're going to punish you for something but then never really doing it. You then know that you can get away with almost anything and you're constantly pushing their buttons to see how far you can actually go and avoid punishment.

Israel killed them in international waters nltf, I believe. Thus, if that is the case, your entire point is invalidated.

I agree. This was provocative.

I'd go even further in saying that I hope we find a way to pull out of the region soon because they are going to provoke a confrontation with their neighbors just because we are there. A war we cannot win.

No, not really.

Israel said they wouldn't let any ships enter Gaza. There is absolutely no doubt that this is exactly what this flotilla was trying to do. And Israel didn't let them do it.

International waters doesn't really matter. If the Israelis suspect the ships are carrying arms, then they have the right according to maritime law to stop the boats and inspect them, just as we do. And its a right we exercise quite a bit btw. The Coast Guard, sometimes with the military in company, stops suspected arms and drug smugglers all the time in the Gulf and Carribean. And we even have firefights with them on occassion.

It appears that the Israelis sent specials ops forces to inspect the cargo on the boats. The Israelis went in heavy handed, and those on the boats reacted angrily, and the Israelis responded with gunfire.

As a hawkish conservative, I can relate to the Israelis. This is why they have survived 50 years surrounded by people who hate them.
