I know there was a lot of news about guys talking him up but do you think this was just a ploy to take some steam out of Clausens sail. I think Cantwell doesn't make the team.

I think there is no way that Pike can be stashed away on the practice squad without another team picking him up. Either Cantwell or Pike come down with an "injury" and get IR'd, or Cantwell gets cut and the Panthers attempt to stash him on the practice squad.

Cantwell is the biggest QB on the team, has the strongest arm, and looked pretty darn good last pre season. The only reason people are overlooking him and assuming that he will probably get cut, is because he wasn't drafted, which is the same reason that so many people doubt Matt Moore. Panther fans should know by now though, that Hurney and Fox don't care nearly as much about a guy's draft status as fans do. They only care about whether he can play or not. See Jake Delhomme, Al Wallace, Louis Leonard, Brad Hoover... etc. They cut plenty of drafted players while those guys were around.

The best players with the most potential should make the team. It doesn't matter whether they were drafted or not.

Pike was drafted in the 6th round. 6th rounders aint that far off from undrafted.

Cantwell has a stronger arm, bigger frame and already knows the system and played well during last preseason.

They player that plays better out of the two at camp/preseason will make it. Remember Cantwell atm is still #2 on the depth chart.

The only reason I think that Cantwell makes the team is because Pike has the same accuracy issues with a weaker arm. It just goes to show you that your W/L record in college (Pike, The Golden Calf of Bristol, etc.) means you were on a good team but doesn't necessarily mean you are a good NFL caliber quarterback.

Thumb injury in training camp for Pike or Cantwell.

Cantwell, Pike. One will be third string and one will be one the practice squad, as long as clausen signs. There isn't anything really special about them that you couldn't find in another free agent rookie next year or from another practice squad. They really are expendable, so if we lose one no big idea. It would be better if cantwell stayed since he knows the offense. There are a lot of big body guys with strong arms that'll come along. I hope it doesn't come down to us depending on a third string quarterback.

Pike will go on IR as soon as he gets a hangnail.

What amazes me, is that, both Cantwell and Pike will probably be upgrades over any 2nd string QB John Fox has had in his entire tenure here. Of course, I'm not counting Matt Moore, because he was never really the clear cut #2, because they kept bringing in veterans.

They won't be second string.

Well I was comparing them to Panthers 2nd string QB's from recent history, but I wouldn't completely rule them out for this year either, especially since Cantwell has already been here a year. I mean, what if Cantwell clearly out performs Clausen everyday in practice and in the pre season? I wouldn't just assume that John Fox will go with Clausen, based on draft status alone, unless he's ordered to do so by Mr. Richardson.

The Big Cat aint usually one to tell the coaches how to run the team unless there is a major salary cap issue involved.

Unless we are all wrong, me, Hurney, every other panther fan, Clausen will not be 3rd string.

He will be active on gamedays.

Pike is already a year away because he has missed most of the post draft camp and OTAs. Besides, he did not play in a pro set offense last season. Neither did Cantwell last year, whose stock arguably dropped more than Pike's, and he looked better than any other QB on the two days I went to OTAs. Pike will go to IR, and there is a battle for the second QB spot, a legitimate one for now. As soon as Clausen adjusts, he will compete for the starting job--but that could take a year. Still, I don't see Cantwell over Clausen if Moore sucks or goes down. We are green, but loaded at QB since Cantwell has come on.

By the way, Steve Berlein was pretty good and a backup to Collins for a while before starting here. IMO, He was the best backup we ever had because I think he is our best QB ever.
