I don't think we should forget or "get over" Katrina. It was a horrible event and does provide many lessons to learn from.
However, having a 5 year anniversary event is a bit over the top.
Main lesson: When a cat-5 is heading straight for you, run. Don't have a car? RUN!
I had to watch that Trouble The Waters for a class. While very sad and all that jazz, I still didn't feel remorse. Yeah, the government didn't send any help at all until the storm had passed entirely...that's why they said "GTF OUT!" Pretty sure they gave a couple days notice. You can walk out of New Orleans in 2 days. I would have if I didn't have a vehicle. But, that's me.
With ALL that being said, the fact of what I saw in that movie was fugged up. But, at that point, it's survival of the fittest. If you have a gun and a tall, dry building, you can decide who can seek refuge and who needs to just keep moving.
