Yahoo! Sports has examined sealed grand jury testimony given by drug-testing expert Dr. Donald Catlin in 2003 and BALCO lead investigator Jeff Novitzky in 2004. Both men testified that THG was not a steroid according to the federal criminal code. Furthermore, Novitzky testified that “there’s never been any studies to show whether or not THG does, in fact, enhance muscle growth.”

The judge in the Bonds perjury case lifted a protective order in November that had prevented about 30,000 pages of documents in the far-reaching BALCO case from becoming public. This is the first in a series of Yahoo! Sports stories that will broaden the understanding of the BALCO investigation, which has resulted in the prosecution of several athletes for perjury or lying to a federal agent and has cost taxpayers an estimated $55 million since the investigation began in 2003.

Bonds, baseball’s single-season and all-time home run king, faces 10 counts of perjury and one charge of obstruction of justice in what legal experts say is probably the final stage of the BALCO investigation. Bonds’ trial is scheduled to begin March 2 in San Francisco, and the deadline for his attorneys to file pretrial motions is Thursday. Bonds, who has been out of baseball since the end of the 2007 season, has pleaded not guilty and has steadfastly denied any wrongdoing.

As I've said, I admired the OLD Barry as much or more than any other player.
What he turned himself into in an attempt to chase down the record and the popularity of other fakes like McGwire and Sosa was disgusting to people like me that wished he just called it a career when his natural skills began to decline.

Sad, really.

The good news is, his downfall has brought about the change that was so desperately needed in baseball. This isn't the WWE.

What amuses me about this is that it's essentially an admission that Bonds used a steroid, but he's "innocent" because they didn't consider it a steroid at the time (they do now).

That's not exactly "innocent"

Legal issues aside, this confirms Bonds did indeed use performance enhancing drugs. And whether he goes to jail or not, it can no longer be claimed that his records aren't tainted.

Barry Bonds made baseball a joke! I really wish I could respect his record but I can't!

I mean we are talking about a sport that still uses a wooden bat to keep the records true and then you have this mess.

I really wish baseball could get back to the status it once was because it is a great sport and America's legacy of sports!!!!

If you read the full article Bonds (as well as his trainer) have steadfastly denied he's ever used steroids. What it essentially admits is that the Federal prosecutors of this case knowingly wasted 55 million in tax dollars to prosecute an athlete that broke no laws. Those same prosecutors didnt bother prosecuting Victor Conte (head of Balco) or Bonds trainer for distributing the "cream & clear". A substance that the Government still has to prove that Bonds knowingly took. Now that we know that substance wasnt even illegal at the time makes the Feds case look weak as wet tissue. Bonds is already Home Run King, now beating the Feds at their own game puts him at mythical status. This one will be thrown out in a few weeks and Bonds might be coming to a ballpark near you this season.

watched an old Pirates -Cubs game on MLB the other night. Ironic thing was the announcers talking about Bonds saying he was a great left fielder but had no power at the plate

True - I know others were involved but others didn't claim one of the games most sacred records either.

Anyways it is what it is and it's over now for the most part!

I am hoping for recovery too and getting back to the sport that we all love minus the scandals!!
