The woman, who lives in Spain and identified herself only as Olimpia, said she did not understand why the birth had shocked anyone — let alone caused an international sensation.
Spanish authorities have released few details about the case to protect the girl's privacy, but her mother told reporters Wednesday that the baby's father was a 13-year-old boy who is in Romania, where the family is originally from.
She and her daughter are Romanian Gypsies, and the mother said it was their custom to allow girls to marry young even though that's against the law in Romania.
