News ran wild Monday that Heathrow Elementary in Seminole County had banned red and green during December because the colors are associated with Christmas.
The TV “Fox & Friends” program and other media outlets cited the story as another sign of politically correct overkill.
Trouble is, the report was in error, Seminole County school district officials said.
“The banning of red and green is simply not true,” said Regina Klaers, district spokeswoman.
The story, which first ran on a local TV station, quoted an outraged parent saying the school banned red and green because they are Christmas colors. But Klaers said the unidentified woman never checked with school officials.
Klaers said there have been no new teacher guidelines for Christmas observance, as the reports claimed. Instead, the school is sticking to its policy of celebrating winter rather than tying the season to Christian, Jewish or other holidays.
Green and red are fine for art projects and decorations, Klaers said.
