Fox news makes people stupid (scientific study)

89 posts in this topic

A University of Maryland study (PDF) published earlier this month found that people in the survey who had the most exposure to Fox News were more likely to believe falsehoods and rumors about national and world affairs when compared to those who paid attention to other news outlets.

In a summary carried by Alternet, the following falsehoods were most relayed by Fox News viewers:

91 percent believed the stimulus legislation lost jobs;

72 percent believed the health reform law will increase the deficit;

72 percent believed the economy is getting worse;

60 percent believed climate change is not occurring;

49 percent believed income taxes have gone up;

63 percent believed the stimulus legislation did not include any tax cuts;

56 percent believed Obama initiated the GM/Chrysler bailout;

38 percent believed that most Republicans opposed TARP;

63 percent believed Obama was not born in the U.S. (or that it is unclear).

I used to watch FOX but can't get that anymore. Can't afford "pay tv" now that obama is running the show.

91 percent believed the stimulus legislation lost jobs;

I am still unemployed!

72 percent believed the health reform law will increase the deficit;

If you think the health care "reform" is going to be free, you are stupid.

72 percent believed the economy is getting worse;

Is it getting better? You are kidding, right?

60 percent believed climate change is not occurring;

It is, but people have no effect on it.

49 percent believed income taxes have gone up;

Fact is: Democrats generally raise income tax(really all taxes) Republicans generally lower taxes. Believe otherwise and you are stupid.

63 percent believed the stimulus legislation did not include any tax cuts;

I don't believe this. Guess I am stupid here.

56 percent believed Obama initiated the GM/Chrysler bailout;

They bailed out GM and left the stockholders with nothing.

38 percent believed that most Republicans opposed TARP;

I know I oppose it. Did the democrats oppose it?

63 percent believed Obama was not born in the U.S. (or that it is unclear).

I have no idea where the muther pucker was borned. He refuses to say.

You participated in the survey too, I see...

Eloquently put. Your points are very compelling. I guess I must reconsider.

This may be true to an extent, but it does show you that the Fox watchers are more likely to lean extremely towards one side of the argument in cases that involve a grey area

    • This is a hypothetical scenario that maybe should be taken into consideration going into the draft in April.  What part of the team would suffer the most if they lost a key player on the respective side? - If we lose Greg Olsen to injury how much of a drop off is their on offense -If we lose a Safety, DE, or LB how much of a drop off is their on defense -Personally I think the offense would loose basically 1/5 of the production and with no real depth to make an impact.
    • I used to hold out hope, but I think that it's become obvious that the organization really doesn't him like that. He worked very hard to put on a little muscle and refine his game before the past season, but still didn't get any real play, despite those in front of him playing lackluster ball. Throw in the fact that we've added another couple of suspect receivers and are searching for upgrades via the draft, I just don't believe that they believe Byrd is that guy.
    • How about u educate yourself before being ignorant?
