this. all prisoners are not animals that need to be strapped down in an empty concrete closet. a lot of people just make bad choices and are paying their time for it and aren't living embodiments of pure evil.

also consider that a good 50% (made up statistic) of people in prison are for drugs.

You don't know many cons do you? I've had quite a bit of experience with them...And let me tell ya, I've not met one yet worth the air they breathe. I'm not saying all are bad, as I'm sure some fall under the category you describe, but most are walking turds.

My g/f did her psycology internship in a prison, I have done some work in one directly with inmates, and both of us agree that most of the guys in there have drug or alcohol issues which got them into trouble. They are not saints, but they do not deserve to be treated like animals either.

While the inmates are spending there allowance, can they get kegs of beer? Maybe a stripper brought in? Dominos?

How about using that money to repay their "debt" to society. If they stole something, pay it back, and so forth.

Yep

What about the Murders? Their victims don't get to watch the Superbowl.

That's true, but they don't have to watch American idol either so that's kind of a wash

I agree with this statement, but not getting to watch TV on brand new flat screens doesn't quite fall into the category of being treated like animals.

as someone who has been to prison before, i just want to add that you cant just throw prisoners away and throw away the key. there are correction officers that risk their lives every day to come to work, and if the prisoners have some form of entertainment, it makes everyone's life easier. Prisoners are people too. i could understand the outrage if it were taxpayer money, but this is money that has been raised by the prisons charging outrageous prices for everyday items like food, soap and shampoo that most people would take for granted.

i think the term "flat screens" is misleading people to think they are getting these big amazing home theatre systems.

they're 13 inch tvs. they're flat because that's what new tvs are.

From the original post:

According to the report, the DOC bought two different kinds of flat-screen TVs: 32-inch LG brand plasmas and a 26-inch Sharp LCDs.

The average cost for each television was approximately $649.

And I still stand by my statement that inmates not getting to watch TV is NOT treating them like animals.

Look, I don't care if inmates get to watch TV or not... in my mind prison is for those who are a blight on society. It should be a place for rehabilitation and re-placement back into society if possible, but that's not always the case, and some people just need to be where they can't hurt anyone. If watching TV is part of a behaviour reward program or something then fine, but prison should also be a place that people DON'T want to go, and with inmates sitting back watching TV is not that place.

I'm a bigger fan of letting the punishment fit the crime.

You stole something? Then you work for that amount for FREE until its paid off. WHILE in prison.

Selling drugs etc you get locked up and some counseling.

And so on and so forth.

Personally, I would probably legalize Marijuana and some other drugs. Kind of stupid to lock people up for something they do to themselves. Legalize em and give R. J. Reynolds something to sell besides Tobacco.

I don't think Murderers should get to watch the Superbowl. They should have to listen to it aon AM, if they do enough work to earn the priveledge.
