Proehl interviews for wr coach

I wouldn't necessarily take that as discouraging. Could just mean they're bargaining on terms.

Remember, contracts are negotiated.

pretty much every zone defense has "dead spots" (there's only so much ground one person can cover effectively). Proehl was very good at finding those spaces.

And yes, that is a teachable skill.

he gets 5 steps on a LB then gets tackled from behind. The joys and pains of being a veteran receiver.

This guy is just what we need from a coach. Still young enough to strap on a pair of cleats and get out there and show the young bucks what he is explaining. With or without Assistant in front of his title he will be a huge contributor to our WRs. I am sure Smitty is estatic.

Jan. 21, 2011 4:35 p.m. - The Panthers are in the process of finalizing a deal that would make former player Ricky Proehl their new assistant WRs coach. The Panthers are still looking to hire a more experienced WRs coach. Panthers RapidReports

Assistant WR's coach? Does that mean he won't be the actual WR's coach?

He was coaching as a player when he was on the team and he owns a training facility. He has experience training and coaching player in his facility, not to mention invaluable playing experience in big games. maybe they're just tacking on the "assistant" and hiring a lead wr's coach (if this happen) as a safety net because he doesnt have experience on a team staff as a coach. either way, he can't cost too much to employ and it could only help. I bet smitty would enjoy coming to practice just to see and work for him. could give him a new energy in camp and practice. he'd be a good mentor to lafell and all the wr's.

On a side note: I had a dream last night we draft bowers. One of those crazy vivid dreams right before you wake up. Thought it really happened.

I'm still of the mind that Tolbert did a good job with our rookies this past year in developing them. I could see us bringing him back (provided he's not taken already), with Ricky as the assitant WR coach.

I also would not be too upset if Ricky got the full-time gig either.

Do you not read anything about football before positing? Tolbert has accepted a position in Denver on Fox's staff....happened days ago.

C'mon back to Charlotte, Ricky! He was one of my favorite "clutch" receivers when he played here.

I like him better as an assistant and getting someone with more experience as the WR coach. He has everything you want as a coach as lots of people have pointed out in this thread - long career as a player with average talent, helped other WRs he played with, obviously knows how to communicate and teach with his current position, etc.

But, out of all the position coaches, the WR coach will have to most challenging role in the next couple of years. We are very young at the position and could really use someone who's proven.

I think Proehl is being looked at as the future WR coach, but an experienced vet coach will be brought in to mentor him as he learns the role. Then in a year or two, the plan is for the vet coach to decide it's time to retire, with Ricky taking over.

Distinct possibility, especially if Steve Reed is right about them trying to talk Jerry Sullivan out of retiring.
