Let me edit my post - needed one of the QBs available in this draft this year :)

Hurney defends Clausen every opportunity he can. He's not stupid enough to go into next season with nobody but him, but Clausen WILL get a chance to win a starting job on this team, no matter who we draft.

That's fine, but damn, if we can't bring in a QB, whether through the draft or FA to beat out Clausen...I mean...I don't even know what to say.

How could anyone who watches NFL football, let alone our GM, need convincing that we need a QB?

it's not that we don't need a QB, but that we don't need one from this draft. we're not rebuilding for a superbowl next season. rebuilding may take 2 or 3 years. we can find a QB in FA, or in next years draft. If there isn't one truly rated for and worth a #1 overall pick, then we shouldn't waste the #1 overall pick on a QB.

I read an article on the huddle where we were supposedly ranked somewhere around 10th in terms of team talent by someone Hurney brought in. That would hardly suggest we are in a 2 or 3 year rebuilding phase. It would actually suggest we are a few players away from contending. Most notably a franchise quarterback. As for is there worth a number 1 pick, I think there are 2 worth that. Doesn't mean we pick them but I would think the only way we struggle mightily is if we don't improve the offense this year.

Our offense was dismal, but was it due solely to the QB position? Why was Matt Moore soooo good the year before but sucked last year? Could it have anything to do with injuries to a key player on the offensive line creating a shuffle of players on the entire right side? That affects run and pass blocking. Could it have anything to do with rookie WR's not yet adjusted to the speed of the game? Could it have anything to do with injuries to our starting RB who had major yardage the year before. What about a play caller and coaching staff that ran the most vanilla offense in the league. They are gone and we're implementing a down the field passing attack this year with our Oline back and healthy with receivers who now have a season under their belt.

Maybe, just maybe, our QB position isn't in as bad of shape as we think. Wouldn't a veteran picked up in FA be a huge help? Will Cam Newton be the saving grace and be the ONE piece that we need to make a superbowl run next year? Remember, you said we don't need 2 or 3 years to rebuild so that must mean with the right piece we can be a contender next season, if you don't believe that, then you must agree we're TWO.... or THREE years away from being a contender just like I said before.

There is never one reason a team struggles on offense. Most of the time there are several issues working. We all know that injuries, poor play calling and a lame duck status all contributed to our poor performance. Include what I said all last offseason which was we got rid of our veteran leadership and depth and it was a recipe for disaster.

But that doesn't excuse the poor offensive showing by either quarterrback. Moore admitted he pressed too much and the pressure got to him. Clausen's problems were obvious.

You seem to be arguing with yourself with contradictory information. If as you say, the QB position wasn't bad and most of our issues are situational, then we are clearly closer to contending than 2 or 3 years away. We also need to shore up a few positions not make wholesale changes.

I think that the QB posittion is the major issue this offseason. I am not comfortable putting all the eggs in the basket we now hold. I want us to find someone in the draft and someone in free agency to fix this problem. At this point we need to make sure we upgrade the position and find players to compete at the position. As such I would not be expected Newton to be the savior this year but the future. I would be looking to find a vet as well to compete.

In fact if I had to choose between upgradiing DT or upgrading QB I would upgrade QB. Rivera's scheme will help the D line but scoring 12 points a game requires more than a new scheme and an aging TE.

There Rayzor is the only guy I know who wanted Luck but said from day 1, if not him Newt is the guy, and he stuck by that when Luck went back to school.

No, not saying the QB position isn't bad, just saying we can't fairly judge it because of so many of the other factors. It would be like saying steve smith is washed up and a has been because he didn't produce. It wasn't him, it was the other factors. Maybe, the same can be said for Clausen or Moore. Moore is going to take the blame on himself, that is what he is supposed to do but I imagine somewhere in the back of his head he was thinking at some point, "Come on guys, somebody block!"

I agree QB is a big issue, but that doesn't mean it has to be addressed with the #1 pick. We could get someone in the 3rd or 4th. We can address it in FA. We could give Moore and Clausen one more shot with a better offensive system and coaches who know how to run it. Hell, even Jamarcus Russell had more than one year and then dumped and he was the biggest bust in NFL history!

We're not so desperate that we absolutely need to spend the #1 on a QB in what seems to be the weakest QB draft in years. Thats like saying, "I desperately need a new car and will spend $50k dollars for one but there are only Honda Accords on the lot so I MUST spend my $50k on an Accord." Is it a car, yes. Will it suffice on getting you from point A to point B, yes. Is it worth $50k, no. So why spend the $50k on an Accord when you can spend $10k on a Civic in a later round or in FA. A Civic will also get you from point A to point B just like a $50k Accord would.

? did I really just make that analogy? LOL but i hope it gets my point across.

I guess that point is, Newton is not worth the #1 overall pick and I feel it would be a huge waste to spend it on him and based on the article, if it is in fact accurate, JR feels the same way and I would imagine even though he said he would defer, I think the message struck home with Hurney, who is on the hot seat after the fiasco last year of trading away our 2nd rounder. Sure, that hasn't be said, but you have to feel it is there. Armanti Edwards was a bust and he will never live up to the potential of the trade that was made to get him. Hurney better get this one right and if we take Cam and he can't come in and be a starter right away like you would expect from a #1, Hurney could be on the way out next season.

Hurney will go safe and take Dareus or PP. I feel both are the closest thing we have this year to a can't miss. Newton has lots of red flags and Hurney will not take him after the Big Cat made it clear he's "Not sold" on Cam.

P.S. WOOO HOOO! POST 600! :biggrinjester:

I understand but I have seen posters (not saying you) saying that we should go defense this year in order to get Luck next year. That is not guaranteed

Keep our offense at status quo we will have a shot at it though the Titans and Bengals are trying to get worse

You are all over the place. I guess you ascribe to the theory that if you throw enough crap on the wall, something might stick.

But lets discuss your poor analogy. Saying that overspending for a car when you can a serviceable car for less assumes that all car will operate the same and be as good.

If I told you that we are having a race and you can pick any car you want. It will cost you 50 thousand dollars, runs very fast, performs great and with some work you have a good chance to win the race. But because it has a big engine it is prone to blowing gaskets and it might not perform as well as you had hoped.

Or if that is too much of a risk, you can wait until all the other guys make their pick and you can have what is left over. The advantage is that you will only pay 10,000 dollars and maybe you can find a steal if other people overlook it. The negative is that most times you get what you pay for, doing this produces very few winners and the car likely won't be better than the one you bought last year despite the fact you finished last.

Or you can keep last year's crappy car, try and fix it and wait until next year. The problem is that you don't know how much money you have to spend next year or where you will pick. Or we could have an auction later in the year and you could try and get a good car then but we don't know when that will happen, who will be bidding or what cars might be up for sale.

NOW WHICH DO YOU WANT???

That is a much closer analogy to reality.

That would be unusual. His degree will be finished next year and the people he said he wanted to stay around for will have graduated that year as well (and will have been seniors and most of them will have been gone).

The only way I see that happening is if they again come close to a national championship but just miss out.

of course, it'd almost be worth seeing how this forum reacts if we pass on a QB this year, get #1 again next year and Luck doesn't enter the draft.

Then its official he doesnt wanna come here. He was probably hoping Dallas had a worse season so he can go there
