Lemme add this while I'm thinking of it.

I've seen already (more here than in the media) that some folks want Newton to be seen as an example of how the black quarterback can succeed in the NFL.

Do all of us - and Newton himself - a favor. Don't do that :nonod:

First off, black quarterbacks already have succeeded in the NFL. Newton isn't the first. He isn't even the first to be taken number one overall or, for that matter, the first to be in the spotlight for the Panthers. It's not like we're in pioneer territory here.

Second, Newton is no more representative of every black quarterback than Peyton Manning or Ryan Leaf are of every white quarterback. While his success or failure will owe something to the team, it will primarily be a purely individual matter and should be judged as such.

And third, before you go putting that kind of weight on him, you might want to wait until he actually succeeds. It's not guaranteed that he will, and if you go putting all the success of black quarterbacks on his shoulders, then what happens if he fails? :(

The league has already seen it's share of Warren Moons, Doug Williams and Steve McNairs. It's also seen guys like Jamarcus Russell and Vince Young. Are all of those guys black quarterbacks? Yes, but none of them are Cam Newton, and he shouldn't be asked to wear the mantle of a McNair or bear the stigma of a Russell. Likewise, neither should anyone who comes after Newton be judged on whether he rises or falls.

Bottom Line: He's got enough to deal with right now just going from college to the pros and living up to the expectations of a trophy hungry fanbase. Let's give him time to succeed or fail at that before resting the hopes of an entire race on his shoulders as well.

Whatever happens, the color of the man's skin will mean nothing. The character of the man inside that skin will mean everything.

I expect we'll be hearing a lot of laptop jokes from division rivals.

That, plus we'll likely see that goofy costume picture more than we ever wanted to.

Neither of those things is gonna bother me much, and if we win games, well then... :D

trash talking will occur regardless.. so if their Ace is a laptop joke, then prepare for me to gash fools with smack as Cam shreds their defense.. I feel that inner flocka flame firing up now just thinkin about it.. damn I hope he turns out legit. I have so much poo to talk!
