Clausen isn't 'real' competition for Newton

Recommended Posts

I really don't think we want Jake teaching. I love him, but I Jake was never a technician or student of the position. He was a gunslinger. He could teach him how to act like a pro, but that's about it.
That would do Clausen some good. He might learn a thing or two about leadership.

Jake Delhomme was a much smarter QB than some of you want to give him credit for.

I don't think we should get Delhomme. I think we should keep Matt Moore, but the general sentiment to me has been "We really need a vet QB who has had success that doesn't mind being a mentor for the younger QBs we have on this roster.... as long as it isn't Jake Delhomme".

Beggers can't be choosers and Delhomme would actually fit the mold that you are looking for better than any QB that will be available in the FA market.

Every other FA I can think of will either want to start or be on a contending team.

Almost no one that is worth a flip at QB will think, "I want to go to a team that was 2-14 and I likely won't have a chance to start after this year"

Panthers won't get a good Vet QB, because they will want to start. Panthers will likely want Cam to start from opening day. They will at least give him every chance and more, even if a Vet outplays him, they will still lean toward Cam. Best they can hope for is a career backup to show up. I think they might keep Moore around, with the intention of letting him play the first 4-5 weeks if Cam isn't ready and then letting Cam come in.

But again most likely Cam starts week one.

I just think that he needs to be pushed and I don't think Rivera is gonna hand him everything on a silver plate.

when you get to this level you are either a self-starter who pushes yourself or an entitled rookie headcase who will blow out of the biz sooner than later.

this is the pros...showing the ropes is one thing but pushing a guy to excel by having him fear for his position will ALWAYS fail...see Tennessee

the psyche is either fragile or strong, there is no in between.

Derek Andersen is the ideal FA but he won't be one till next year. He knows the system like the back of his hand and went to the pro bowl running it.

Ideally there is another FA vet out there that has experience with the Air Coreyell offense.

I don't think that bald guy from Seattle would be a good choice. Don't they run the west coast? I may be wrong.

And with the season Cam had while being IMO the most scrutinized college player in recent memory, I would go with the latter.

They will bring in plenty of competition.

If they don't, they are the ones that must live with the consequences.

See, I would be surprised if they do. Seems like any QB good enough to start isn't gonna want to come here, and any who aren't good enough to start we shouldn't want. It would seem to me to be smarter to just roll with Clausen and let him get more experience, or God forbid actually show something, and give your rookie time to develop. At worst, then you have a more experienced backup, or if Jimmy sucks it up, you cut your losses and roll with your rookie late in the season or next year.

That's would be my conventional wisdom....but it only matters if you are developing a rookie with a chance to be decent. IMO Cam is no such rookie.

I believe that there is plenty of competition already there. If Cam wants to succeed he needs to play against himself, not competition and any acquisitions that he could possibly perceive as a lack of confidence a.k.a. stopgap could sidetrack him or at the very least cause him to press himself to a degree that may be detrimental.

New staff, good core of players, strong backfield and O-line (c'mon Otah)...

this should be enough to give him the support and opportunity to show us what he can do.

Someone like Moore might also be in the mix. It might not be Moore himself but someone similar to him, still pretty young with some games but not very many.

It doesn't have to be an old ass vet to give him competition and it doesn't have to be Clausen.

I think our starter will be somewhere in between.
