Everyone, bad news. Smitty is gone. Its a fact. There are people close to him, advisors and whatnot, who have confirmed this. I wish, personally, that it wasn't true. But it is, and we just need to get used to it. So, the questions is, what do we do. This year, the only hope is that we get a vet WR in FA, along with a QB that could help Cam develop. The problem is that the lockout is preventing all of this from happening, and the driving force, or at least one of the main ones, is JR. JR is not going to pay for FAs to the level that we will need to fill these holes. I believe that things are not going to get too much better next year because of all of this...

Advisors and whatnot? This is hardly credible....

In the past we could say that JR wouldnt sign FA's but we've already signed one in Jeremy Shockey... a player that in the past we wouldnt have signed. Steve Smith spoke up and basically said that anything could happen... he could be a Panther, with a new team, or the lockout will prevent him from playing anywhere. You gotta give us more than "advisors and whatnot."

The truth is that Smitty is a very rare player. There's probably only 5 or so WR that cause any defense the kind of matchup problems that SS does. We will not be able to "replace" him if he is gone. LaFell, Gettis and Pilaries will not play like SS does, they will not demand defensive changes to coverages like SS does.
If we cannot retain SS, I don't look for Marty Hurney to break the bank for some hot shot WR with mediocre results (Vincent Jackson springs to mind).

I don't think Terrell Owens or Randy Moss are great enough to fill Smitty's role, but we could get TO or Moss at a nice price for a make good one year contract. We could add a little veteran leadership (don't snicker) and a good route runner for a few mill. Cam needs targets and we just don't have them at the moment.

Wouldn't mind TO. Don't know if I could watch the Panthers if they signed that piece of poo Moss though.

Maybe Mike Sims-Walker or Jones(GB)? I don't know, looking at the pending free agent list it's not looking pretty outside of V-Jax(won't happen).

No... I wouldnt bring in any vets for these guys. They both had a solid year given the circumstances. If Steve Smith is out, then Mike Goodson can play RB as well as slot. With Jeremy Shockey/ Rosario at TE, theres enough experience there. Bring in Pilares and let these guys play.

and all that will lead to will be a VERY high pick, likely 1st or 2nd, sorry, but LaFell and Gettis are NOT number one recievers, without a Steve Smith or signing a vet like Floyd to replace Smith will just lead to Newton not being able to find open WRs, it will be easier for corners to stop the panthers on passing plays because ot the inexperience of them both. like i said, IF Smith is gone from Carolina, Malcolm Floyd, Sidney Rice and others MUST be looked and if not them, a proven 2nd WR. Gettis and LaFell will improve, but they wont be stars without a go to reciever helping them out.

I'd love Sims-Walker in panther colors. he's seriously under rated. Rice would be a great pick up as well. but I'm trying to be realistic. Mike Sims-walker would fit in nicely.
