Former NFL QB Chris Weinke, who is working out with Cam Newton, believes the No. 1 overall pick is capable of starting on Opening Day.
"This guy wants it bad," said Weinke. "If he continues to work and stay focused the way he is right now, there's no reason he can't go in as the starter Day 1. The guy's got as much drive as anybody I've seen. The misperception from outside is that he was going to be challenged by the intricacies and the verbiage of the NFL. And I have not seen that at all." We'd bet on Newton beating out Jimmy Clausen, but the Panthers may also sign a veteran in free agency.

I was worried about Cam and owe no apologies for it. There were too many people willing to toss a coin with the first overall pick--someone else's coin. Nobody knew squat, so as we sit and watch the dust settle, it is nice to see this emerging. Oh, by the way.His stats? 0-0-0-0 with a QB rating of 0.0.

Pfft, when he starts winning. Then I'll believe it.

Two national titles at two different levels and a drive to be the very best. I think that is more than enough to believe in CAM NEWTON.

IT IS OK TO BELIEVE!!!!!

Don't POP an artery Dave. He's in the NFL. His reign in college is over. Now its time to prove he can win at the next level. Until he does, until I see him take a snap under center correctly, make reads like a NFL QB, go through his progressions first then bolt and become a franchise player. Until he dominates I won't believe he's our guy. Just because I don't believe now, doesn't mean I don't want him to become our franchise QB and a nightmare to the rest of the league. He has to prove it at the next level. Bottom line.

We'll See. I was in favor of drafting Cam. Figured he would work hard at first and build something. He wants to be recognized as a true NFL first line QB. All that said, what everyone should be more concerned with is down the road and the effort that will be put in. I believe he will continue to give us and himself that effort, but there is always temptations from hangers on or people wanting part of his time. That will be the true test. I don't even know if I could resist some of the things he will be facing later on. Sure would like to have that opportunity though.

Oh I see so that means you are only a fan when we are good? Same concept!! You only think we will be good after we have 12 Ws under our belt. If you don't believe than what do you have. Jump on the bandwagon after he is good. And if he fails then you can say I told you so...

Sounds aweful bandwagon to me.

Allow me to laugh at your bad attempt to label me as a 'bandwagon' fan. The idea of it is silly. Don't question my loyalty for this franchise that I love dearly. I was with the panthers since the beginning. Through high and lows, 1-15 and recently 2-14. Just because I'm skeptic on a guy that is a huge question mark and has a lot of work ahead of him, does not suggest I'm a bandwagon fan good sir. He has a whole lot to prove. Until he does I'm not a fan of cam. I am a panther fan. I'll support the guy because he's on my team, I will hope he truly becomes special. Right now I'm skeptic. I'm not the only person that feels this way. Im waiting on cam to prove me wrong. Idont have a problem to say I am wrong either. That's about it. Oh, font question my loyalty without knowing me. You know what they say when you assume right?

Every rookie has to prove themselves, so you should say I'm not a fan of no rookie until they prove themselves.don't take into consideration that the guy is busting his ass during the off season.and you are a bandwagon fan if you wait until he wins to like him, what the fug you think that means?

I still don't understand why people questioned his work ethic in the first place. There was never any evidence that he wouldn't work hard, aside from the opinions of people who didn't even know the kid.

it's understandable, though. no question he cheated on a few tests while at florida as a freshman.

i understand from experience that poor test taking abilities doesn't equal laziness or stupidity. also, being a good student in gen. ed. classes have nothing to do with how well you do in areas that you actually care about. people look at him cheating and automatically assume that means he's either stupid or lazy and for a lot of people, probably most it just isn't true.

anyway, they put a lot of stock into mistakes/shortcomings he had as a freshman and figure thats just who he is, ignoring the notion that people can and do actually change and grow up after making mistakes brought on by immaturity.
