Lucas nixes deal to Detroit; could be cut

Recommended Posts

The NFL’s trading deadline begins Friday, though talks already have been in high gear.

The Panthers tried trading cornerback Ken Lucas to the Detroit Lions. Problem is, once the two sides were engaged in discussions, Lucas let it be known that he did not and would not play in Detroit. Thus, trade talks were abandoned even though some in the league thought the trade might go through.

The talks are an indication of what Carolina has in mind for Lucas, who is scheduled to make $5.6 million in base salary this season. If Carolina cuts Lucas this week, it will free up $2.375 million against its salary cap. For a team desperately searching for space, Lucas provides some of it.

can't blame Lucas for that....he is on the backside of his career and you gotta expect him to insisit on going to a competitive team.

Good. I'd like for him to be traded, but sending him to Detroit would be awful. "Thanks so much for everything you've done for this team; for how you handled that whole clocked-by-a-teammate situation. In return, we've traded you to the worst team in NFL history."

Yes that would be pretty freaking slack of 'em.

Yea, theres no reason to send a vet that has helped us to such a bad team. At least look for a playoff contender in the afc, I mean I'm sure he wants a chance to get a ring.

I talked to Ken Lucas after the Denver game and told him to take the first trade the Panthers put in front of him. Needless to say, I am disappointed that he ignored my advice.

Would you sign with Detroit on the end stretch of your career? Ken has done more for us than that.

I don't know, Ken, this could be your ticket to the Pro Bowl. Who was the cornerback we had in 2001 who had interceptions in eight straight games? Doug Evans? Sometimes you go to a crappy team, stand out, and that's what gets you in. I mean, usually it works the other way but Lucas should at least consider it. He might get 10 picks in Detroit.

I would have liked to get a round-starting draft pick out of the Lions for Ken, but I completely understand his refusal to go there. He deserves to have a say - to a certain extent.

Hey!! Are you the Canadian "Cat" that was fired for plagiarizing ESPN and Lombardi? Sounds like it. Back it up right or don't post.

Extremely circular, unverifiable story.

edit - a real blog.nfl link was posted later in this thread, apparently this was the real deal

All that said, corners with age/declining skills aren't exactly the most marketable commodity to barter for a trade. We're talking ham sammich here IMO. Maybe something 5th-7th round if we're lucky. It's still better than a straight cut though if such a deal can be found.
