Charly Martin and Chevis Jackson scrapping and yapping. Rivera not pleased, tells both to get back to huddle.

billvoth Bill Voth
Charly Martin and Chevis Jackson extracurricular broken up by McDermott. Then, they jaw at each other next play, Rivera furious.

Evening, folks.

Very interesting night on the sidelines. Taking tomorrow off, as it will be a walkthrough/fluff interviews, so we will have more time to devote to launching other modules on our site. Podcasts, message boards (can't compete with this, of course), videos, X's and O's segments.

It's a work in progress. Thanks for supporting the site. Honestly, I will have more freedom from outside the ropes to deliver a more honest read on what's going on inside the ropes. Doesn't make sense? Don't worry--it's jibberish.

Tonight was compelling. Full recap later at www.the212daily.com.

I don't like predictions, but anyone who says that Newton had anywhere close to the night that Clausen did tonight is uninformed or has an agenda. I have no agenda, if you read my work.

Clausen would have to "sh*t the bed" on Friday for Newton to pass him, IMO. Just the way things feel out there at camp, to this observer.

Kudos to Joe Person, Steve Reed and a pair of PR/Media champs from the Panthers: Charlie Dayton and Ryan Anderson. Both were awesome with helping the "rookie" out.

Between my radio gig, the new website, and my work as a freelance reporter, this season is by far my favorite assignment--not because I am a fan, but because I can see the nuances and architecture of the NFL game right in front of me.

I'm trying to model my site, and subsequent podcast after a few sources:

--NFL Matchup Show (Jaws, Hoge)
--Sirius NFL Radio Movin' the Chains (Ryan, Kirwan)
--Greg Cosell from NFL Films (twitter.com/gregcosell)

We want to push beyond the "broad" opinions of "should this dude start" or "can Cam's smile transform a city", and keep things on message with pure football analysis. We're off to a good start, and it should only get better from here.

I will be in Charlotte for each home game, will full previews, in game tweets, and post-game reports.

In the mean time, keep checking in each day to the site, and follow me at www.twitter.com/johnellis212 (tweets are protected because, believe it or not, there are some hack-job journalists out there--not the ones above).

Thx,
John

Sounds like Clausen had a great night.....but, as previously stated...I'm not very concerned about TC now. Ready for the live bullets this Friday. Some fold under pressure and some are "gamers" (did I do that right, Mike Rucker)?

he did play pretty well last game, maybe he can again.

Clausen would have to "sh*t the bed" on Friday for Newton to pass him, IMO. Just the way things feel out there at camp, to this observer.

you're literally the only reporter who hasn't been trumpeting "Newton to start..." you really think Clausen was good enough to hold off the allure of seeing what the future holds for now? Or was newton that subpar?

I really appreciate your stuff, John... keep it coming. :)

Newton is a gamer when the lights come on he puts it all together which is why i don't read to much into his practices.

just got home from camp. Cam looked absolutely terrible today. on the bright side, Steve Smith dominated. He did an awesome spin move to get space after a catch. it was incredible. Clausen looked good, too.

Did Cam's attitude pick up at all or was he pretty subdued throughout practice?

Was it that bad? Hangover from the game or just this practice get him that way?

they are probably installing parts of the offense that are pretty different from what he ran at Auburn - that was the explanation for his down practice last week I think, he was having trouble with the offense a bit. Not surprising, he is only a rookie and he's got a lot of ground to cover.

Not practicing well as a rookie is a bad thing. That said, I think he is doing as expected and thing those with a Cam or bust agenda are making excuses for him. What they fail to realize is that for any player, especially a rookie, and even moreso for a !st overall pic QB, not practicing well and being known as a "gamer" is about the worst thing you could be.

I wish people thought before they posted.

You see, I've been a sports writer since 2003. Before that, radio. I was born into a radio fam, so I've had a rare look into the "agendas" of many in the media.

Your regulars: Gantt, Person, Reed...the beat guys...are genuinely good. You may not like their work, but they work hard.

For every one of them, you have dozens of hacks who literally (and I have seen this)...scan tweets from other sources, and put together their word secondhand.

It's a dying biz, sports journalism. Social is where it's evolving to, and honestly--love him/hate him--Florio is the best example of taking a simple blog, working his tail off, and building an enterprise.

It can happen, if you attack the stories with an honest perspective. You have to add value along the way--something the aforementioned either can't/won't.

As you will see on the site in the coming weeks, the P.O.D. will be considerable.

You guys rock, and thank you for the support.
