Don't you know, that's PF4L's MO.

And now this thread has turned into crap. Listen to this guy, Stroupe-a-loop. He's one of the best at what you're trying to do.

I'm fairly confident that if we win a Superbowl sometime in the near future, there will be people who say "Yeah, but Cam hasn't broken Brett Favre's career passing yardage record, so he hasn't proven anything yet."

to be fair, there's a pretty big difference between what Cam has done so far and winning the Superbowl... Especially when most of the arguments against cam relate directly to winning.

but there are people that will never be happy...

More my point....

But to be fair, since we drafted the kid its become fun to talk about the Panthers again. That's closer to winning a Superbowl than I thought we'd be in a decade at the end of last season.

Precisely. That's actually what I am saying too.

You missed the other side of the coin though. It's not his garbage time rating that leads to that assumption it's the fact he's rating is a 57.0 outside of the 4th quarter. It's not an assumption. That is his rating in our 5 losses. His rating is an average of 86.9 in the first 3 quarters and a 57.0 in the 4th quarter outside of his garbage time.

That was my point too, his total 4th quarter QB rating is heavily inflated and saved by that garbage time. If you discount it he looks average in the 4th and below average in the 4th in our losses. If you take it into consideration, he's been a pretty horrible passer.

I'm not arguing his playing has been negative I'm arguing why.

You said this

The irony? His garbage time rating is a 102.9, better than any other quarter rating or average, and better than his career rating of 82.8. What this says is that it's not so much the pressure of running out of time and having to speed up that bothers him, but the pressure of actually winning the close game, when we're tied or behind.

You used the garbage time as the justification for the idea that it's personally pressure related.

As if the fact that there's no pressure on him in garbage time is the reason for his high ratings and not the soft defences.

How do you know it's not the of the increased speed of the game, defences adjusting and playing to the pass more, the less diversity in play options, that are the main reasons for his struggling?

I see what you're saying. That was my main generalization of it, but I agree with all of those points as well and touched up on those earlier in the thread. All of those things have a lot to do with it and became more apparent when looking at his completion %, yards per attempt and sack adjusted rating.

I stated earlier I believe he still has to adjust to the defenses becoming more stringent and aggressive in the 4th quarter when trying to prevent a close game. What his completion %, yards per attempt, as well as sack adjusted rating revealed was his tendency to get more conservative in the 4th and hangs on to the ball longer. And of course part of that also has to do with our opponent's defenses getting tighter during a close game, and more relaxed when they're up by 2 scores and playing preventive D. And this is where he has to learn how to release the ball quicker, not hang on to it longer. He's doing the opposite of what should be doing, which is the instinctual, but incorrect thing to do.

But yeah, I'm sure they both have a direct effect though. Defenses as well as pressure. They go hand in hand after all.

One positive I did take away though, and goes against one of those things you mentioned is speed of the game. I suspected the same thing and I was wrong to think it was an issue with the 2 minute offense prior to dissecting the numbers in that matter. But that didn't seem to affect him because his garbage rating is much higher, as well as those garbage drives being in the final seconds and those were drives where we had to speed up our plays. He appears fine with that and can speed things up just fine without making costly mistakes. Again he's posted the best rating of his game when playing fast. So speed of the defenses, yes. Speed of the game and offense, no. That seems to help him. Makes sense if you think about it: preventive D plus getting into a passing rhythm.
