Mock Draft Mania

jawnyblaze i think you were the one who introduced the silly phrase "omg that would be like the smallest DL evurrrrrrrrrrrr!" when it obviously isn't.

also the bigger a DT you want the harder it is to find one who is well conditioned. For instance having 2 DTs about 350 lbs a piece in the interior isn't a great way to generate pressure. At 285 playing as a DT last year Coples dealt with many double teams because he was hard to contain, now I'm not saying put him in as a nose in a 4-3 but if you line him up as a 3-tech on a lot of downs that would be a favorable match up.

best defensive player available

simple as that

I don't think Coples will be there, so that leaves Brown, Thompson and a couple of corners. Brown gets the nod there as most places have him as the highest rated defensive player in the draft.

I'm not saying draft the biggest DT possible, and I'm not saying having the biggest D-line possible is important, I'm saying being way undersized is a problem. I've actually been pretty anti-Ta'amu and he's the biggest DT projected in the upper rounds. I want two DTs that are 300-320 lbs and two DEs that are preferably 270-285 lbs, but that is more flexible than the DT spot. A 280 lbs DT isn't going to hold the point of attack very well. He might shoot gaps occasionally, but he's just going to get blocked down away from the play when it's runs. Coples would be good for our pass rush, no doubt. That's not our weakness though. We're weak against the run, and having 3 DEs and 1 DT as our line would be a detriment to our run defense. That's all I'm saying.

Coples is not as good as everyone makes him out to be IMO. In the film against Miami he draws some holds and stuffs some runs, but seems like he just can't get around that corner for the sack. Also the frat brand on his arm is disgusting.

Jay Ratliff is listed @ 287 and he plays a 0 tech NT in a 3-4.

what does his brand have to do with him playing football? the guy can command a double and have some pass rushing skills/ push the pocket as a 3 tech. he is DL and can play any position on the line hence making him more valuable.

Ok. That's in a 3-4. We don't play in a 3-4 so what works for the Cowboys ain't gonna work for us. Ratliff has two guys over 300 lbs around him, and Ratliff doesn't play against the run very well. He's a pretty decent pass rushing DT, but if you count Ware as a DE they still run with my formula, two guys that are 270-285 (actually Ware is 260, but OLB in a 3-4 is ok to be smaller), two guys that are 300-320.

JawnyBlaze,

What you must realize is that most of the people arguing for Coples here are all UNC fans that are willing to overlook other key positions that need upgrades (OLB, RT, CB, DT, 2WR) just to see 'their' guy here. If you can come to terms with this, then you'll save yourself a lot of arguing. Sincerely,

Nicbsbll2

if he is bad vs the run, than why is he a pro bowler year in and out? a NT in a 3-4 scheme has to anchor the line and command a double team. with your formula you still have your size with Hardy and CJ at the DE spot 260-270+. Coples whose frame can add bulk to be 300+ without losing a step and a NT that is 300+. and im no unc football fan.

I'm still trying to figure out where it was suggested that Coples would be converted to a full time DT if drafted here

Um, because he's a Cowboy? And he's also a decent pass rusher. Pass rushing statistics are more easily quantifiable and impress Pro Bowl voters more.
