Still, I'm ashamed in the fact they felt like they "had" to get the ball back. You know, last year in the MNF game with the Eagles and Redskins, the announcers said something should be put in Canton (perhaps Vick's jersey) to remember that night. What!?!

The thing is, we know Cam broke the record. Why do we need a ball to prove it. It sounds like idol worship or something.:D All I'm saying, if I was Cam, I would be mad to hear about them getting the ball back. He wanted her to have it, and that's that. Don't undermine the man, it was his to give.

At auction that ball could exceed 10k the Panthers need to do a little better.

NEW PORT RICHEY --

Of the more than 50,000 people who left Raymond James Stadium on Dec. 4, it's a fairly safe bet New Port Richey teen Katie Brown departed the happiest.

Not only did she get to see her favorite team, the visiting Carolina Panthers, dismantle the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 38-19, she got an unexpected late-game surprise from her favorite player, the Panthers' rookie quarterback, Cam Newton.

Following Newton's third 1-yard touchdown run of the afternoon, the former Heisman Trophy winner from Auburn bee-lined it toward Brown, who was standing near the rail of the north end zone. Newton pointed up and delivered a clean handoff to the 16-year-old River Ridge High School junior.

"I can't believe that he picked me out of everybody he could have given that football to," Brown said by telephone last week. "He usually does this 'Superman' thing after touchdowns, but he got the ball and pointed at me so I went down and he gave me the football. I was honestly speechless when he gave it to me."

Lending the moment a personal touch, the gift wasn't just some spur-of-the-moment gesture with Newton simply spotting the first fan wearing his Carolina blue. He knew the blond girl clad in a black, hand-decorated T-shirt was in the area.

"I made it the night before the game," Brown said of the shirt, reading "Katie + Cam" on the front and "Mrs. Newton" on the back. "I stayed up until 4:30 in the morning making it. I wanted to go so bad and my dad kept saying that we're not, but I still made it anyway."

The effort paid off more than she could have expected. During a second-quarter TV timeout, a group of Panthers fans got Newton's attention in order point out Brown's homage, eliciting an appreciative laugh and head shake from the first-year phenom.

The mental note of Brown's admiration was made and the rest was history.

It was Newton's 13th rushing score of the season, breaking a single-season record of touchdown runs by a quarterback set in 1976 by Steve Grogan of the New England Patriots.

So, the ball was kind of significant — something that tends to find a spot at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

Panthers assistant equipment manager Don Toner drew the undesirable task of having to approach Brown, her parents, DJ and Renee, and younger brother, Noah, and ask for the ball back.

Brown's response?

"I understood because it was his achievement," she said. "The fact that he gave the ball to me and I got to touch it and hold it is amazing. I honestly believe that Cam is the one that broke that record and I'm just a fan. He's the athlete and he deserves that ball. I don't."

Her father joked that he wished his daughter would have held out, though her gracious response without second thought came as no shock.

"Knowing Katie, it doesn't surprise me at all because that's just the type of person she is," he said. "She's a very loving kid."

To pay back Brown's understanding response, the Panthers have been showing their appreciation since game day.

Equipment personnel quickly replaced the touchdown ball with another game ball and sent four Carolina hats into the stands for the family.

On Tuesday, Brown came home from school to find a package in front of her bedroom door postmarked Charlotte, N.C. In it were an authentic and autographed Cam Newton jersey and three other shirts.

Wednesday morning, Brown took time out of her school day to be a guest on the Keith Larson Show, a Charlotte-aired AM radio program. During the interview it was revealed that the Panthers will be inviting Brown and her family to the team's home game Christmas Eve, coincidentally against the Bucs again. Brown will get to meet her NFL idol and get her game ball signed in person.

The overall response has been a little overwhelming, Brown said, but she's having fun with it. Now she's just waiting for the experience of meeting the player she's admired since spotting him on TV during an Auburn game last year.

"Ever since then, I told my dad that that's the guy — when he gets drafted and goes to the NFL, that's the team I want to go for," she said.

Brown, who coaches and mentors cheerleaders with the West Pasco Prowlers youth league and volunteers at school with the Special Olympics, said Newton's perseverance through negative scrutiny has been inspirational.

"I love how he hasn't let what anybody said bring him down. That's something that I really love about him; that he strives for what he believes in and doesn't let anybody bring him down along the way.

"He's also a phenomenal athlete, he's an outstanding leader and he's someone that not only I can look up to, but he's other people's role models, too."

Given the content of Brown's personalized T-shirt, maybe there's a little something extra that helps push Newton to the top of her list.

"Yeah," she said laughing, "there is a little bit of a crush mixed in there, too."

Good afternoon Panther Nation!

For those of you that have followed my post, my daughter is the "fan" that Cam gave the football too in Tampa several weeks back. Her name is Katie Brown.

The Panthers have graciously given us 4 tickets to this game, Im also hearing about pregame sideline passes, but that has not been confirmed yet.
We will be in section 125. I was wondering if this was the "tunnel" area of the stadium?

We would also, like to stop by your tailgate for a bit if possible and if thats ok. I dont know how long we would be able to stay, but wanted to stop by and say hello to you all. I have no idea where this will be but we will try to find it. I have no idea where we are parking or the area in general. Im hoping to park somewhat close to the stadium and not walk forever. Any suggestions?

If anyone would please provide me with some suggestions on how to get there, where you will be, parking and parking fees and any other into that would be greatly appreciated.

My cell number is 727-946-0266 and my email address is dj1288@yahoo.com, if that would be easier. We will be traveling into town in the AM.

Thanks very much

DJ Brown

Welcome back, I'd recommend you take your cell # down however, a lot of good people here but a lot of whackos on the internet as well. Ask Huddlers who want to help to PM you their Cell # and go from there.
Hope you enjoy the game!
