I think it's acceptable if you had a close family member go to school.

I half heartedly will cheer for GT and Auburn because my brothers went there. I'd certainly be happy if/when either win a national championship.

I would never deny someone the right to be a casual fan of a team through association. My dad, grandpa, uncles went to Michigan State so I was cheering for them to win last night. Notice how I use them instead of we though

I don't care if someone says we and he or she never went to that school. As long as they say we when that team is struggling.
