Did you actually read the article, or just the catchy headline?

Drug testing actually harms drug users. Most people that would only smoke pot if there were no testing, give it up for harder drugs that can be washed from the system faster.

I am not saying that I advocate people on welfare using drugs, I am just saying that it is bad science.

link?

I dont have a link, but I know that it is true from not only past personal experience, but also from observing many of the people that I know including people on probation and people that get drug tested for work and people in the military.

I live in a military town, and I know plenty of men and women that would rather smoke pot, but instead they use cocaine and painkillers because it is easier to get away with.

I'll do a search and see if I can find a scientific link.

Straight from wiki...

Drug testing is more likely to catch cannabis users, since THC metabolites are fat soluble and have a longer duration in the body than those of other drugs which are widely considered more dangerous such as cocaine and heroin. This can potentially lead would-be cannabis users to switch to harder drugs, most of which generally have significantly shorter detection times and/or are less likely to be tested for.

that seems monumentally stupid.

and it really isn't a fault of the drug test... it's not as though people are physically addicted to cannabis and then in order to function they have to switch to cocaine because of a test.

people just want to get high and will destroy themselves to do it... to blame it on the drug test seems childish.

I agree 100% with testing people on welfare.

I disagree 100% people have to be drug tested for a job.

BUT

the fact is, we are usually tested for a job and because of that fact, people on welfare, without jobs should be tested. How are they ever going to stop taking our 'free' money if they are not able to get a job?

If you're going to test potential employees you also need to test the unemployed so that we are not paying people to sit and use drugs everyday.

If I have to be randomly tested for my job to earn the government money to pay people without jobs, they could at least have the decency to test the poeple receiving my money.

Some states have tested welfare recipients for drugs (Florida most recently) and quickly stopped because they found that 1) people on welfare use drugs at a lower rate than the general population (drugs are expensive) and 2) it costs more money for the state to test them than they would be losing in the first place.

The only people left that think this is a good idea are the people that have no idea that it does not work, or do know it does not work but it makes them feel better knowing that people on welfare have to suffer even more indignity.

It is not about drugs at all. It is just another way for goment to get out of paying us what we deserve. All my friend that are on the programs do drug. Hell, without the checks, they will not be able to buy drug anyway. So there you go.

You mean a government run operation is losing money? Of course it costs money, but it shouldn't be looked at as a buisness. Welfare isn't there to make money.

I just speak from a working citezins point of view I'm sure someone on welfare would have a different perspective. From my perspective, the one actually paying the bill, I'd rather pay for someone who is planning on getting a job rather than one who can't.

You have to take into account that there are also a LOT more LEGIT people on welfare now. The results would be much different in a different economy.

But let's not derail the fact and the fact is passing a drug test is a must for 90% of jobs in America, and is required in order to pay the welfare checks (for the people who have a job and pay taxes), so why is everyone ok with testing the worker but not the receiver?

I dunno, just seems fuged up to me. The economy has flooded people on welfare by a huge drastic percentage so I believe that is a big part of it not only being a low percent but also a very expensive program. I am still behind the idea of it though because as someone already stated there are quite a bit of people that exploit government welfare for drugs, I have been exposed to i as well.

There are some jobs like piolets for example that I believe must be tested.

Have welfare people pay for their own drug test or don't get welfare....They will get the money.
